✨ AI MasterClass Reflections ✨

Last week I stepped into something I once thought was completely over my head — AI.
And I’ll be honest… I’m genuinely glad I pushed myself to go.

What started out feeling daunting turned into a huge eye-opener. AI isn’t here to replace us — it’s here to equip us. Whether it’s personalised information, support with learning new skills, or tools that help you run your business more efficiently, AI has a place in every part of life and work.

There’s so much noise about AI wiping out industries like bookkeeping and accounting. I don’t buy it.

If you refuse to evolve, yes — you’ll struggle.
But AI itself? It’s a tool. And last week I watched an entire room of people build systems that will transform their businesses in ways they never thought possible.

And here’s the part some people won’t like:
➡️ Does becoming more efficient mean lowering our fees?
Absolutely NOT.

Efficiency doesn’t magically appear. It takes:

⏰ Time
📚 Learning
🧪 Trial and error
💷 Investment
🧲 Commitment
🛠️ And continuous development

Being faster, streamlined, and more accurate doesn’t reduce your value — it increases it. AI doesn’t replace expertise; it elevates it.

One of the best parts of the MasterClass was the people.

A group of driven, inspiring individuals sharing ideas, solving problems, and creating things we once thought were “too advanced” for us. Turns out we are capable — when we have the right tools and stop doubting ourselves.

There is always a way if you’re open to learning.

Even the word “impossible” still contains “possible.”

💬 How are you planning to use AI to improve your life or business in 2026?

Are you actually a qualified and regulated bookkeeper?” – Why I love when clients ask this question.

A few weeks ago, a potential client asked me this question — “Are you regulated and qualified?”

Now, some bookkeepers might feel awkward being asked that, but I honestly loved it. 🙌

It showed they were doing their due diligence, just like a proffessional bookkeeper does on their clients too.

Because when you think about it… why wouldn’t you check the qualifications of someone managing your business finances and tax responsibilities?

I reassured them that not only was it a great question, but one I wish more people asked!

Here’s why it matters 👇

👩‍🎓 Qualified & Regulated Bookkeepers
✅ Monitored by a professional body (ICB, AAT, etc.)
✅ AML registered, insured, and ethically bound
✅ Up-to-date on laws, payroll, VAT, and MTD changes
✅ Offer peace of mind that your accounts are compliant

‼️ Unqualified & Unregulated Bookkeepers

⚠️ Often cheaper — but at what cost?
⚠️ No professional regulation, AML cover, or insurance
⚠️ No guarantee of accuracy or accountability
⚠️ Not up to date with current tax laws
⚠️ And if something goes wrong, you’re still responsible

When it comes to outsourcing your bookkeeping, trust is great — but verification is better.

So if you’re ever unsure, ask the question.

And if someone’s qualified and regulated, they’ll be happy to answer it — just like I was. 😊

This past year has been a mix of wins, lessons, and a few moments of what on earth am I doing? 😅

I’ve hit some big goals, ticked off a bucket list dream, and kept moving forward — even when it felt like three steps forward and ten steps back.

Those “ten steps back” are where most people give up. But every time I’ve kept going, I’ve realised progress is still happening… even when it doesn’t feel like it.

The truth is, all those little steps — the late nights, the trying again, the small wins — eventually come together in ways we don’t always see at first.

Keep going. Keep believing. Every step counts. 💜

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone ✨

What’s one goal or dream you’re still taking small steps toward? 💭

Ever thought… “Why do I need a bookkeeper if I’ve already got Xero and do my reconcilling myself?” 🤔

Because Xero is a tool — it doesn’t know your business the way you (or your bookkeeper) do!
Sure, it looks easy — but behind those buttons are VAT settings, payroll codes, journals, and reconciliation rules that can get messy fast. One wrong click and suddenly… it’s not balancing, VAT’s off, or your accountant is sighing heavily. 😅

DIY bookkeeping often ends up costing more to fix later than it would have to do it right from the start.

A good bookkeeper keeps your data accurate, your business compliant, and your stress levels low.

Think of Xero as your car dashboard — and your bookkeeper as the mechanic making sure the engine runs right! 🚗💨

💬 Have you ever tried doing your own books? How did that go for you?

What a day at the in London! 💙

So much valuable insight packed into one event — from the latest Xero enhancements and marketing strategies, to deep dives into Making Tax Digital and the growing role of AI in bookkeeping and business automation.

Not to mention… the breakfast, lunch, tea and cakes definitely helped fuel the brain while absorbing all that information and inspiration 🍰☕️

A huge thank you to Xero and all the organisers for putting together such a fantastic event. Always love a day out with the Xero team and their partners — it’s energising, educational and full of new ideas to take back to clients!

A little reflection from my weekend in London 💜

Walking down Oxford Street, I was shocked by how many people I saw sleeping rough — more than I’ve ever noticed before. But what really touched my heart were the good people walking along with trolleys, handing out hot drinks and food. Watching that simple act of kindness gave me goosebumps.

Every person out there has a story — some have fallen through the cracks of a system that should have protected them, while others genuinely choose that life for the freedom it gives them. Whatever the reason, being homeless is hard, and I can’t help but admire the strength it must take just to get through each day.

For those of us lucky enough to have homes, jobs, and family — our version of freedom looks very different. But that doesn’t make us any better, just different.

To the kind souls out there giving time, food, and care to people who’ve been forgotten — thank you. You make the world a little warmer. ☕💜

🌟 4 Quick Wins to Make Your Bookkeeping Easier This Week 🌟

Running a business can feel like you’re juggling a hundred things at once. The good news? Bookkeeping doesn’t have to be one of the stressful parts. Here are 4 simple steps that will save you time (and headaches!):

✅ Use digital receipt capture – no more lost bits of paper.
✅ Block out 15 minutes a week – little and often is far easier than a big year-end panic.
✅ Use online bookkeeping software – it keeps everything in one place and helps with Making Tax Digital.
✅ Keep a separate bank account for your business – it keeps things tidy and makes HMRC happy.

Small tweaks now = big time savings later.

Need a hand getting set up or want to free yourself from bookkeeping altogether? I’d love to help. 💬

🚨 Builders, Electricians, Plumbers & Subcontractors – Big Tax Change from April 2026! 🚨

If your turnover is over £50,000, HMRC says you’ll need to follow Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

‼️This will be based on your turnover from your 2024-25 tax return.

⚠️ Remember: Turnover = your total sales/invoices – NOT your profit.
So if you bill £50k+ a year, even with high expenses, you’re included.

This is where a professional bookkeeper makes life easier:
🔹 Keep you compliant with MTD rules
🔹 Submit accurate quarterly returns
🔹 Help you understand your numbers, not just file them
🔹 Save you time so you can focus on your trade

💡 How MTD benefits you:
✅ No more big “end of year” tax shock
✅ Better grip on cash flow throughout the year
✅ A clearer view of how much you’re really making

Don’t panic – I’m here to help make it straightforward for you.

👒 Being self-employed means wearing all the hats!

HR, payroll, accounts, admin — when you’re the boss, you’re also the departments too.

This week I spoke with a sole trader who had set up a business with a family member. 5 months in, they hadn’t registered with HMRC as self-employed and had taken on staff without setting up as an employer. They were paying people in cash until an employee recently asked for a payslip — and suddenly the reality hit.

If you’re self-employed:
✔️ Register with HMRC as soon as possible for Self Assessment.
✔️ Register as an employer with HMRC and The Pensions Regulator before paying staff.
✔️ Give employees contracts from day one.

Not doing this can lead to fines, payroll investigations, and disputes with staff.

Running your own business is exciting — but getting the basics right is what helps your business thrive (and keeps the stress away!).

🙋 Which “extra hat” have you found hardest since becoming self-employed?

This week I came across the term “Phoenix Company” — and it’s not as mystical as it sounds. 🦅

A Phoenix Company is when a new business rises from the ashes of an old one, usually after the previous company has been liquidated or closed down. Sometimes it’s completely legitimate — keeping the viable parts of a business alive. But other times, it can be used as a way to walk away from debts or liabilities… which is where it gets a bit shady.

As bookkeepers, it’s important to spot the difference 🔍. A genuine restart can save jobs and keep the economy moving. But if it’s done to dodge creditors, it can spell trouble.

👉 Have you ever come across a Phoenix Company in your line of work? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Why I love being a bookkeeper. It’s not always just about the numbers, it’s also the reward of being able to help small businesses owners get the most out of their business and to inspire them to love what they do, even if they are the ones crunching their own numbers.
