This Inclusion Week, we are reflecting on the small, practical choices that help people feel heard, respected and able to participate.

Inclusion is not really tested by what is written in a policy; it is tested in the everyday moments.

Who gets invited into the conversation? Who feels comfortable asking a question? Do we explain things in a way that works for the person in front of us, rather than simply the way we have always done it?

People bring different experiences, perspectives and circumstances with them. Creating an inclusive environment means recognising those differences rather than expecting everyone to fit the same template.

Think of inclusion less like opening the same door for everybody and more like making sure everybody can actually get through it.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme is: “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

The principle has relevance well beyond healthcare. Whether we are talking about workplaces, families or communities, people are rarely well served by assumptions about what they “should” need.

Good conversations start by understanding the person in front of us: their experiences, priorities and concerns. Only then can support become genuinely meaningful.

For World Mental Health Day, it is worth remembering that making space for people to speak is only the first step. The next is making sure we truly listen.
