Missed the 5 October Self Assessment registration deadline? Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either.

If you’re newly self-employed, started renting out a property, earned income outside PAYE, or have untaxed income to report, you may still need to register with HMRC.

Leaving it until January can create unnecessary stress, especially if you still need to gather records, understand what expenses you can claim, and work out what tax may be due.

The sooner you deal with it, the easier it is to get back on track. Not sure whether you need to file? Speak to APS Advisory.

Newly self-employed? Started receiving rental income? Earned income outside PAYE? You may need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October.

(And if you still file a paper tax return, the deadline is 31 October.)

These deadlines are easy to overlook, especially if this is your first year needing to complete a return. Do not wait until January to find out what you should have done in October.

Before you complete the sale, make sure you know what needs reporting, what costs can be included, and whether any reliefs may apply.

For those in scope, the first quarterly update deadline is 7 August 2026. These updates are summaries of income and expenses submitted through compatible software, so good record-keeping is essential.

APS Advisory can help you get MTD-ready well before the deadline.

From April 2026, SSP is payable from the first full day of sickness absence, and the previous earnings threshold has been removed. That means some employees who may not have qualified before could now be eligible.

A welcome update for employees, directors and self-employed individuals who use their own car or van for business journeys.

The approved mileage rate has increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, backdated to 6 April 2026.

For employers, this may mean reviewing mileage claims already submitted this tax year and checking whether payroll or expenses processes need updating.

For individuals, it is a reminder to keep accurate records of business mileage, including dates, destinations, purpose of travel and miles driven.
