Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for sole traders and landlords with income over £50k in 24/26 tax return

HMRC has said that, starting in September, it will sign up those taxpayers for MTD who should have joined earlier this year.

Sign-up will happen in stages over the following months, with more detailed guidance to follow in August.

This only affects those taxpayers who are mandated for 2026/27 – anyone required to join in April 2027 or 2028 are still expected to sign themselves up (or ask their agent to do this) in the usual way.

If you would rather keep control and not depend on HMRC, please get in touch.

I offer a support to sign up zoom session for £20.

Disappearing in August can make September harder.

You do not need to post every day.
You do not need to force a big launch.
You do not need to create content just to look busy.

But staying gently visible now helps you avoid the September panic of:
What should I post?
Where are my enquiries?
Why does everything feel messy again?

Use August to keep the basics warm.
Share a useful tip.
Remind people what you do.
Check your website.
Update your Google Business Profile.
Talk about one problem your ideal client is likely to be thinking about before autumn.

Also coming up: my Content Planning Workshop on 23 September at 12pm.
Perfect if you want to head into Q4 with clearer content ideas, less last-minute posting and a plan you can actually stick to.

September is easier when you do not start from silence.

If you are wondering why your Bookkeeper or Accountant is a little FRAZZLED!

How MTD reached its first deadline in chaos
'content from Molly Macfarlane'
The first Making Tax Digital quarterly deadline is just one day away, and the run-up has been anything but smooth.

Software So Far -
“There’s no stable, consistent specification for software developers to comply with.” They warned that different software could therefore interpret the same rules in different ways, meaning “any practice using more than one MTD software may get different ‘behaviour’ from each”.

No Consistency -
And then when accountants made those judgements and completed the submissions, another problem was waiting for them – proving whether HMRC marked the job as done.
“There isn’t a standard HMRC acknowledgement in the way many of us have become accustomed to,” Milstead explained, adding, “There is no familiar tax return layout. No standardised submission journey. No universally recognised confirmation from HMRC. Even the terminology varies from one provider to another.”

HMRC problems -
Then, with a week to go before the deadline, some clients were still being blocked by registration problems. Accountants reported people being signed up for the wrong year, corrections not showing and submissions continuing to fail.

And so, it’s been a long old month, with accountants caught between systems they couldn’t control and clients who hadn’t done what was asked of them. And unfortunately this is only the beginning.

Luckily I only had 4 clients in the 26-27 cohort and all went smoothly with Xero and Quick Books - I count myself as a lucky few!

Perhaps the children need you differently now.

A relationship has changed.

A role that once gave your days meaning no longer fits in quite the same way.

Nothing is necessarily “wrong”.

Yet you keep asking yourself, “Who am I in this part of my life?”

Transitions can bring freedom and grief into the same room.

There may be excitement about what comes next, alongside sadness for the version of you who is being left behind.

You may also notice old relationship patterns, forgotten longings or a quiet inner knowing becoming harder to ignore.

This is not something that always needs to be reduced to a list of symptoms.

Sometimes it asks for space where your emotional, psychological and spiritual experiences can be explored together, without judgement or dismissal.

My approach is personal and adaptive. There is no fixed script and no expectation that your experience should fit neatly into one explanation.

You are allowed to meet this next chapter slowly. ✨

Not every SME needs a full-time marketing manager.
But many do need strategic marketing support.
Especially when marketing starts to feel reactive, inconsistent or too dependent on last minute decisions.

Strategic support can help with:
- Clearer priorities
- Better positioning
- More joined up communication
- Stronger website and social messaging
- Search visibility, including AI-driven search
- Practical implementation that connects back to business goals

This is not about adding more noise.
It is about making marketing count.

If your business is growing, but your marketing still feels messy, this may be the point where external strategic support makes sense.

Because your business counts.
