Operating digitally isn’t for everyone and we are always happy to meet with you via Zoom or in-person to provide advice and discuss your accounts and cash flow with you. ⏰ MTD DEADLINE 7 NOVEMBER

𝑺𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔: your second quarterly MTD update is due on 7 November.

It covers your income and expenses up to 5 October. It's a running total, so if your first update was a bit thin, now is the time to get your records in order.

One thing to note is that 7 November is a Saturday, so we'd recommend aiming for the Friday, or earlier. Remember that a quarterly update is a summary rather than a tax bill, and no payment is due with it.

We talk about profit all the time so it's important that we understand what it really is. Here's a quick guide:

👉Your Revenue is your sales or receipts during the period in question.
👉The Cost of Goods Sold is how much the products and services that you sold cost.
👉Your Gross Profit is your Revenue minus the Cost of Goods Sold.

But it doesn't stop there:

👉Operating Expenses are the costs associated with running the business during the period in question. Anything and everything from stationery to salaries and advertising to insurance. These costs need to be deducted from your Gross Profit.

So: to find your Gross Profit
⭐Revenue - Costs of Goods Sold = Gross Profit

And to find your Net Profit (the profit with ALL costs removed)
⭐Gross Profit - Operating Expenses = Net Profit

Now there may be tax conversations that need to take place (hello again!), but in principle, this short guide should help you to understand the basics of your P&L statement.

The 12-month transition period ends in mid-November. Every existing director and person with significant control (PSC) needs to be verified by then. Many people need to do it sooner, because their own deadline is linked to their company's next confirmation statement.

Figures from the summer suggest that only around half of directors have completed it.

If you leave it too late, you could find that you can't file with Companies House, and that can quickly become a bigger headache.

Started working for yourself last tax year? 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐇𝐌𝐑𝐂.

If you became self-employed between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026, or had untaxed income such as rent for the first time, you need to have registered for Self Assessment by 5th October (today!).

Missed it? Please don't panic! The important thing is to get registered as soon as possible so your tax can be paid on time in January.
