Sometimes known as a nomination form, an expression of wishes allows you to designate one or more beneficiaries whom you would like to inherit your pension pot.

A will might not be enough to ensure your benefits go to the right person, so reviewing your expression of wishes every year when you get your annual pension statement is a good habit to get into!

Should update and designate one or more beneficiaries you would like to inherit your pension pot when you die

Haven’t heard of the 60% tax rate? Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

The 60% tax rate isn’t an official rate of Income Tax, and as a result, isn’t mentioned in any legislation. It comes from the tapering of the personal allowance when your income goes over £100,000. It affects anyone earning between £100,000 and £125,140, since the Additional Rate tax band changed on 6 April 2023.

Find out more on the 60% tax trap and how you can avoid it here:

It is well known that the UK tax system is complicated. One of these pitfalls is the ‘hidden 60% tax rate’. If you haven’t heard it, don’t worry, you’re not alone!

Is there a limit to what I can pay into a pension?

Yes and no! You can technically pay in what you like. However, the real attraction with pensions is the generous tax relief you receive on your contributions. It’s here where there is a limit to the amount you can pay in whilst still attracting this benefit, and many providers will cap your payments in at this level to avoid any issues with HMRC and adding too much tax relief.

The best way to understand tax relief is to see it in action!

Our tax relief calculator is a handy way to figure out how much that will actually get put into your pension when you contribute an extra sum.

Remember, you are only allowed to contribute tax efficiently up to as much as you earn, and a £40,000 annual allowance applies to most people.
