Just because football’s coming home, doesn’t mean your tax refund is. 🏴

Missing expenses, CIS deductions and payments on account can all affect whether you are due a refund or have tax to pay, and if your bookkeeping is all over the place, you’re basically playing with no defence.

Can you claim work clothes on your tax return? 👕

This is one people often get wrong. 🤔

Just because you bought something for work, it does not automatically mean it can go through your business.

HMRC are strict with clothing, so it is worth knowing the rules before you claim it.

Some work clothing can be claimed, but everyday clothing is where people usually get caught out.

Can you claim home office costs?

Yes, but not the full amount.

This is where people can get caught out.

If you work from home, you can claim the business use part of costs like heating, electricity, rent, phone and internet.

But the claim needs to be fair.

You cannot just put all your household costs through the business because you work from home.

So yes, home office costs can be claimed, but only the business use part.

Attended the AAT North Hampshire Branch event at Hampshire Court Hotel last Wednesday, covering Current Tax Topics and Making Tax Digital with Past President Michael Steed. 📚

Tax rules and reporting requirements are constantly changing, which makes it essential to keep learning and stay up to date.

Events like this help me make sure the advice and support I give my clients is current, accurate and relevant to what is happening now. ✅

It was also great to meet Michael Steed and Christina Earls, both former AAT Presidents, and to connect with other accountants in the area. 🤝

A really useful session and a great reminder of the value of continuing to learn and develop.

Your phone bill is one of those costs that often gets missed, especially if you use the same phone for business and personal use. Getting it right means you claim what you’re entitled to and save tax where possible. If you’re self-employed and want help making sure your expenses are claimed properly, send me a message.

Buying a vehicle for your business? Get advice before you spend your money.

Before buying a vehicle, a sole trader asked me to explain the tax options. I went through the different routes, so they could choose the most tax-efficient option before committing. The best route can depend on whether you buy, finance, lease, or claim mileage, so getting advice first helps you choose the right route based on your business and your goals.

Thinking about getting help with your tax or accounts?

Getting started with me is simple. First, we arrange a meeting so I can learn more about you, your business and what you need help with. After that, I’ll send you a clear follow-up email setting out my services, the fee and the next steps, so you can read through everything properly and decide if you’d like to go ahead. If you need help with your tax, accounts or bookkeeping, send me a message and I’d be happy to arrange a meeting.

Recently at the Harbour Hotel, I was asked by FreeAgent to introduce myself and talk about how I’ve grown Alfred Tripp Accountancy over the last year.

Public speaking is definitely outside my comfort zone, but I’m glad I said yes. I only left employment in April 2025, so it was a good chance to reflect on how much my practice has grown and acknowledge the hard work that has gone into building it.

The last year has been a lot of work, a lot of learning, and plenty of moments where I’ve had to push myself.

As you can probably tell from my face in the pictures, I was very nervous 🫣

Good communication with your accountant takes the stress out of tax.

I keep clients updated, explain things clearly, and make sure they are not waiting weeks for a reply or relying on Google to understand their tax.

I’m always happy to chat on WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook.
