Thinking of hiring a freelancer or contractor to help out? Be careful, HMRC looks at how you actually work together, not just what it says on the contract. ⚠️

If you set their exact working hours, supply all their gear, or treat them like a core member of your staff, HMRC might classify them as an employee.

Misclassifying someone can trigger unexpected tax bills and penalties further down the line.

Tax scams are getting smarter and far more convincing. Here’s a quick sanity check to keep you safe:

1️⃣ HMRC will never ask for personal or banking details via text message.

2️⃣ They won't press you to make instant payments using gift cards, money transfers, or weird links.

3️⃣ When in doubt, log in directly to your official HMRC gateway account, never click a link in an unexpected email or SMS.

If something feels off, flag it with your accountant first before taking any action. Stay safe out there! 🔒

Buying a new laptop vs. paying for your monthly software subscription, they feel like the same thing when the money leaves your bank account, but HMRC looks at them completely differently!

Business Expenses: Everyday operating costs (like utilities, software, or office stationery). You deduct these directly against your income for the year.

Capital Assets: Bigger buys that bring long-term value (like vehicles, machinery, or heavy tech). Instead of deducting the total cost upfront, these are usually claimed over time through capital allowances.

Getting the two mixed up can lead to a messy tax return. Make sure to hit save on this post for your next spending review! 📌

Hard to believe we’re already halfway through the year! ⏳

Before you get swept up in the rush of the second half, take a breather and run through these 5 quick financial checks:

Review profit & performance: Look at what actually brought in money (and what wasted it).

Catch up on bookkeeping: Stop the receipt pile-up before it turns into a tax-season panic.

Check your cash reserves: Aim for 3–6 months of running costs saved for peace of mind.

Update your goals: Adjust your revenue targets based on how the year is actually going.

Cut dead weight costs: Cancel those unused software subscriptions quietly draining your account.

Swipe through the slides for a quick breakdown on each! ➡️

AI is fantastic for speeding things up, but let's be honest, it's not going to catch every hiccup in your accounts.

Software is brilliant at processing data, but it can only work with the information it's given. If something is coded to the wrong expense category, a transaction is missed, or a duplicate invoice is entered, the software won't necessarily know it's wrong.

Automation saves time, but it still takes a real pair of eyes to spot unusual transactions, question anything that doesn't look right, and make sure your records are accurate and compliant.

We love technology, but nothing replaces experienced human oversight when it comes to your hard earned money.

It’s rarely the big purchases that throw off your books... it’s the sneaky little ones you completely forget to log!

From quick parking receipts and software trials that quietly auto-renewed, to those emergency supply runs paid on a personal card, missing small expenses means leaving your hard-earned money on the table when tax time rolls around.
