VALUE ADDED TAX

Registered businesses charge Value Added Tax (VAT) on their sales. This is known as output VAT and the sales are referred to as outputs.

Similarly VAT is charged on most goods and services purchased by the business. This is known as input VAT.

There are three rates: standard which applies to most goods and services, reduced rate for some goods and services such as home energy and zero rate goods and services, for example, most food and children's clothes.

New penalty system for Making Tax Digital (MTD)

If you’re a VAT-registered business, you may have received a letter or email from HMRC, informing you that the new penalty system for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT is now in place.

The penalty system was rolled out in January 2023 for MTD for VAT, replacing the existing penalty regime.

For non-VAT registered sole traders and landlords, penalties will apply when MTD for ITSA comes into effect in April 2024.

For more information our partners have created 'The small business guide to MTD for VAT penalties' that tells you everything you need to know or get in touch with our team if you have any questions.

Why hire an accountant?

Engaging the support of an accountant can free up time for small business owners to focus on other priorities.

An accountant can support your businesses by:
improving cash flow by identifying potential issues ahead of time
offer specialist advisory services that could save you money

The 1.25 percentage point rise in National Insurance will be reversed from 6 November.

The previous government decided to raise National Insurance by 1.25 percentage points in April 2022 to fund health and social care. The rate was due to return to 2021-22 levels in April 2023, when a separate new 1.25% Health and Social Care Levy was due to take effect. Today’s legislation reverses the rise from earlier this year and cancels next year’s introduction of the Levy.

Wedding season is in fully swing! 👰

Did you know, Marriage Allowance allows married couples or people in civil partnerships, including those who have been together for many years, to share their personal tax allowances if one partner earns below the Personal Allowance threshold of £12,570, and the other is a basic rate taxpayer?

Eligible couples can transfer 10% of their tax-free allowance to their partner, which is £1,260 in the 2022 to 2023 tax year. It means couples can reduce the tax they pay by up to £252 a year.

You can apply any time and, if eligible, could backdate their claims for up to four previous tax years to receive a payment of up to £1,242!!
