Over the past few years, the role of the finance team within charities has evolved. The pandemic challenged their work as income suddenly decreased causing budgets to be completely redrawn. Suddenly the finance team became heavily involved in decision-making with the charity’s directors. This brought light to how important finance teams are to a charity so much so some charities began recruiting finance professionals to go beyond fulfilling a purely technical role, instead they are expected to function as fully integrated partners in the charity becoming strategic leaders and getting involved within other departments to ensure financial short and long term stability. Finance in charities is obviously super important so that they can continue to make a positive impact in their community and worldwide. How involved is your finance department?

"Yesterday the first set of changes made are being introduced by the Charities Act 2022 come into force, introducing a range of provisions including new powers for trustees.
These provisions include:
* An extended power for charities to pay trustees for providing goods to the charity under certain circumstances (in addition to services, and goods connected to services)
* A reduction in the administrative complexities surrounding fundraising appeals that do not reach, or exceed, fundraising targets (often known as ‘failed appeals’).
* A new statutory power for Royal Charter charities to change sections of their Royal Charter which they could not previously change, with the approval of the Privy Council."

This week is ! Not only to spread awareness but also an opportunity to share guidance and support so that you can put better practices in place for your charity.

A new survey found that around one in eight charities had experienced cybercrime in the last 12 months, the charity commission has since warned charities about the risk of online fraud. The most common attacks experienced were phishing and impersonation, which for both of these, personal data is at risk. The survey highlighted the potential lack of awareness finding that only 24% of charities hold a formal policy to manage the risk. Over half of these charities hold electronic customer records.
