Sold a second property recently? The clock’s already started 🏡

For UK residential property sales where there’s a Capital Gains Tax liability, you have to report the gain and pay the tax within 60 days of completion. Not exchange… completion.

It’s a separate return from your Self Assessment, filed online through HMRC’s dedicated service 🖋️

Miss it and penalties start at £100 and climb from there, with interest on top.
Get it right and the right reliefs can bring the bill down, but they don’t apply themselves 👀

You don’t need expensive accounting software to start 👀

A simple spreadsheet can help you record:
📈 Money coming in
📉 Business expenses
🧾 Outstanding invoices
💷 Tax set aside
🏦 Your monthly profit

Set aside a little time each week to update it, keep your receipts organised and check your figures against your business bank account.
It might not have all the clever features of accounting software, but having a basic system is far better than relying on your bank balance and hoping for the best 📊

As your business grows, external software can save you time and give you greater visibility, but the most important thing is that you’re consistently tracking your numbers.

VAT isn’t just a yes or no decision 😬

Hit £90,000 turnover and you’ll need to register, but in some cases, registering earlier can actually benefit your business.

The key is understanding how it affects your pricing, your customers, and your margins.

Get it wrong, and it can cost you.
Get it right, and it can work in your favour.

If you’re travelling overseas purely for a break, the costs won’t be tax deductible… 😎

But if the trip has a genuine business purpose, such as attending a conference, meeting clients, visiting suppliers or speaking at an event, some or all of the costs may be allowable.

The key question is:
Would you still have made the trip without the business reason?

If the answer is no, you may have a valid claim. If the trip mixes business and personal time, the costs need to be separated correctly 💸

Keep a clear itinerary, receipts, confirmations and evidence of the business purpose, because HMRC may look closely at overseas travel claims.

Planning to claim your next business trip? Get advice before you book, not after HMRC starts asking questions ⁉️

A good accountant shouldn’t only appear when your year-end deadline is looming 👀

They should be helping you understand your numbers, plan ahead and make confident decisions throughout the year.
Because the real value isn’t just in filing your accounts. It’s in the advice, support and conversations behind them.

Your accountant should be part of your business journey, not just your year-end checklist.

Seeing money in the bank doesn’t necessarily mean your business has made that much profit 💸

Your bank balance includes money that may still need to cover bills, VAT, tax, wages and other upcoming expenses, while profit is what’s left after your business costs have been deducted 🤔

Knowing the difference helps you make better decisions and avoid any nasty surprises later! 🔎

If your tax bill feels like it comes out of nowhere every year… you’re not alone 👀

Payments on account catch a lot of people off guard, especially in the early years of being self-employed.

It’s not about doing anything wrong, it’s about not being shown what to expect.
With the right planning, nothing should be a surprise.
