This is the first year in a long time, that the last vat returns were filed a day before the deadline. 7 Feb is usually the last day of a very long period of work from 2 Jan to 7 Feb without a day off.

Today however, there is "nothing to do". I say that in jest because all the admin stuff gets pushed aside until after 7 Feb. Now it's time to tidy up the spreadsheets and the Engager practice management software to make sure it is all ready for the next tax year.

Also... MTD is approaching. We will be in contact with anyone affected and there will be a separate post about MTD.

This year I had tighter deadlines for the tax returns and I stuck to them. Anything that came in during January won't be started until next week.

We will be sending out automatic reminders this year until the work comes in. Look out for those as they should land in your inbox during April. That email will advise you of the deadline (31 Oct 26)

We are now into our busiest period and work is done strictly in the order that it comes in. We had a lot of work arrive in November, after the deadline of 31 October had passed.

We will not be accepting any paperwork after Friday 19 December to meet the January deadline. If anything does come in after then, we will try our best but cannot guarantee that the work will be done in time and you will incur a Β£100 penalty from HMRC.

The office closes on Monday 23 December and will reopen on Monday 5 January 2026.

MTD ITSA starts in April 2026, with the first quarterly filings being due on 7 August 2026. Initially this is only for Sole Traders and Landlords with turnover of over Β£50K. If you meet the threshold then HMRC will send you a letter. Clients will be required to file their figures quarterly, with one final 5th filing taking the place of the tax return.

For us to be able to file quarterly, we will need clients to be connected to software and we will be using Xero Simple, which costs Β£8.40 per month currently. We will also need paperwork to be dropped off more regularly. Your business bank account will be connected to the software, and if you do not have a separate account for your business, then you should now open one in preparation for next year. The turnover threshold will be reduced to Β£30K in April 2027, bringing more people into MTD ITSA.

If we are only your bookkeeper and you have a separate accountant for tax returns, then they will be responsible for the 5th filing and we will file the quarterly ones.
