Many business owners spend years building a successful business.

But retirement doesn't begin when you sell the business.

It starts much earlier than that.

When we speak to business owners approaching retirement, the conversation is rarely just about pensions or investments.

More often, it's questions like:

• Will my business give me the retirement I want?
• Should I sell, pass it on or step back gradually?
• Where will my income come from after I leave?
• Am I relying too heavily on one asset?

These aren't decisions to leave until retirement is just around the corner.

The earlier you start planning, the more options you're likely to have.

We've put together a guide looking at some of the most common financial planning mistakes business owners make before retirement, along with practical ideas to help avoid them.

You can also swipe through the carousel below for a quick overview.

Inheritance Tax planning starts with the people you care about.

Who should receive what?
When should they receive it?
What do you need to keep for your own future?
How would your family pay any tax bill?

These are useful questions to ask before decisions become urgent.

For families in Cirencester and the Cotswolds, property, pensions, ISAs, investments and business wealth can add up quickly. A clear plan can help you pass wealth on carefully, while keeping enough for the life you still want to live.

Our latest guide explains the main options in plain English, including gifting, trusts, life cover in trust, charitable giving and the pension changes expected from April 2027.

Can you pay into someone else’s pension?

We’ve added a simple calculator to our website to help you see how pension contributions for a spouse, child, grandchild or another family member may grow over time.

You can adjust:

• How much you pay in
• The tax relief added
• The growth rate
• The age you want to see the value at

For example, if the pension owner does not earn money, you can usually pay in £2,880 a year. HMRC then adds £720, making £3,600 in total.

Retirement is changing.

For many people, retirement no longer means stopping work completely.

We often speak to people who want:

• fewer working days
• consultancy work
• mentoring
• more flexibility
• a gradual step back instead of a hard stop.

That can work very well financially but there are a few areas that can catch people out.

Salary, pension drawdown, consultancy income and the State Pension can all interact in ways people do not expect. Future pension contributions can change too.

One small decision can affect your options for years.

We put together a short guide on working after retirement in the UK.

Selling a business can shape the rest of your life.

For many owners, the business is more than just a source of income. It may also be:

• your pension
• your family security
• your biggest financial asset.

That is why planning early matters.

Three to five years gives you time to think clearly about retirement, future income, pensions, investments and what you want life to look like after the sale.

The sale price is only part of the picture.

We have put together a practical guide for UK business owners thinking about selling in the next few years.

Most people don’t pay too much tax in retirement because of complicated rules.

It’s usually down to how they take their income.

Once work stops, it’s no longer just one salary.

It becomes a mix of pensions, ISAs, savings and investments, all working together in ways that aren’t always obvious.

And that’s where things can quietly go wrong.

A common situation we see:

Someone takes a large pension withdrawal because it feels like the easiest option.

But that one decision can push them into a higher tax band and create a bigger bill than expected.

What tends to work better is a bit more joined up thinking.

Using different pots together.
Spreading withdrawals over time.
And being clear about what you take, when, and from where.

It doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need a plan.

We’ve pulled this into a practical guide based on the questions people often ask as they approach retirement.

If you’re in your 50s or 60s, it’s well worth a read.

Most business owners we speak to have built up cash in their company.

But they’re not completely sure what to do with it.

And it’s not because they haven’t thought about it.

It’s because there are a few moving parts:

- What needs to stay accessible
- What could be used more efficiently
- And what’s genuinely long-term.

So it often just sits there.

We’ve found having a simple framework makes things much clearer.
