"Can I claim for taking a client out for dinner?" 🍽️
Client entertaining is one of the most misunderstood ones - the cost of entertaining clients (as opposed to staff) generally isn't tax-deductible, even though it feels like a business expense. It's one of the few areas where "obviously business-related" and "allowable" don't actually match up.
Always worth checking before you assume - this one catches people out a lot.

🔸Monday Myth-Busting - Business expenses

"I paid for it on my personal card, so it doesn't count as a business expense." 💳

Actually - it's about what the purchase was for, not which card paid for it. If it's a genuine business cost, it's still claimable even if it went through a personal account.

The card is just plumbing; what matters is the receipt and the purpose.

This one trips people up constantly, especially in the early days before separate accounts are set up.

"I heard cash payments don't need to be declared."

They absolutely do.

Cash income is treated exactly the same as any other income - the only difference is it's on you to keep a clear record of it, since there's no bank statement doing it for you.
