📣 Not sure if you need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

It’s easy to assume Self Assessment is only for self-employed people, but there are a number of circumstances where you may need to submit a tax return to HMRC.

You may need to file if you’re:

✔️ A sole trader earning more than £1,000
✔️ A partner in a business partnership
✔️ Liable to Capital Gains Tax
✔️ Subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge
✔️ Receiving rental income
✔️ Receiving certain untaxed income, such as dividends, savings interest or foreign income

If you’re newly required to complete a tax return for 2025/26, you normally need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2026.
