Do you understand how the 7 year rule applies to gifting? Or payments made into a trust?

In some cases, Business relief can be used to speed up the process,

When you retire, if you have to sell your business, you could lose assets benefiting from business relief as part of the process, are you aware that there are certain investments that will allow you to reclaim your business relief within 3 years of the sale?

Last weeks budget means that from 2027 more clients than ever will have a potential inheritance tax bill, which means that understanding “gifting” and the use of trusts - to reduce a potential Inheritance Tax Bill, will become even more important than it already is.

Not just the inclusion of Pension assets within IHT calculations but also the reduction of Business Relief reduces the armoury one can use and therefore sooner really is better than later when it comes to IHT planning

Do you understand “the order” of gifting and why it is so crucial? If not make sure you speak to someone who does!

I Had a great day at the ‘Institute for financial wellbeing’ Conference on Tuesday, it raised some excellent questions, included the difference between Financial Independence and Financial wellbeing- do you know the difference?

I had a eye opening reminder yesterday of the importance of Protection policies, at an annual review with one of my clients, they informed me that while we were sat in our review, their 45 year old daughter in law was having surgery for Bowel Cancer, it transpired that in this instance their son and daughter in law had taken out Critical illness cover on their mortgage and so it has been repaid in full and it was one less thing for them to worry about, when I heard this I was instantly relieved for them.

This experience and that feeling I had, made me realise that this is probably an area I can do more in, not only for clients but for their loved ones with young families and mortgages, especially as I have first hand experience with our quotes being 30% lower than the cost being quoted to clients, when they have recieved quotes from their mortgage provider for example, even using the same insurance provider - clearly a benefit of independence, rather than tied or restricted provider relationships, they give us their “best” prices!

Remember - Protecting yourselves and your loved ones really is far more important than protecting your possessions
