Suppliers talk.

A business known for paying late, or needing three chase emails per invoice, ends up at the back of the queue when stock is tight and top of the list when prices go up.

That cost never shows up as a line item in your P&L. It just shows up as worse terms.

Reliable payment is a bargaining chip most businesses never cash in.

Most large businesses knows how they performed in July by the second week of August.
A lot of small businesses find out how they performed in July several months later, when the accounts are finalised.

Nothing about a monthly close is exotic...

Income and costs recorded to the right period.
Accruals and prepayments applied.
Results reviewed against expectations.
Ten working days, then move on.

The value isn't the report. It's a pricing problem spotted in month two, as one example, which can still be fixed.
The same problem spotted at year end has already cost you ten months of margin.

You don't need big enterprise software to fix accounts payable. You need five decisions made properly:

β†’ One invoice inbox. No exceptions.
β†’ A written bank details change procedure, callback to verify, plus second sign-off.
β†’ Approval limits and deadlines, so invoices don't sit on one desk for weeks.
β†’ A fixed payment run, communicated to suppliers.
β†’ Three numbers tracked monthly: cost per invoice, cycle time, on-time payment rate.

Some customers make you money. Some just keep you busy.
A total margin figure won't tell you which is which.

Break profitability down by product, service or customer, and the picture usually looks different.
A handful of accounts carrying most of the profit, a few others quietly costing you time and capacity or losing money outright.

Most businesses already have this data. It's just sitting uncategorised in the bookkeeping system.

We help clients structure their accounts so that answer takes five minutes to find, not a full afternoon of digging through spreadsheets.

Did you know you have a legal right to charge interest on overdue invoices? Most UK business owners never use it.

For context: late payments cost the economy Β£11bn a year and are linked to around 14,000 business closures annually.

Subscription creep. A supplier price rise nobody flagged. Capacity you're paying for and not using.
None of these show up clearly in annual accounts. Twelve months of data averages them out.

Big business performs consistent monthly reviews which enable them to catch these costs while they're still small.

I am not talking about one dramatic saving. It's a dozen small ones that individually didn't seem worth chasing but collectively make a huge difference to your net margin.

Profitable businesses fail too, and it's rarely the unprofitable ones that go under first. It's the ones that run out of cash while waiting to be paid.

Corporate finance teams run a rolling 12-week cash forecast, updated weekly, so they always know exactly when money is coming in and going out.

That turns a vague sense of unease into a specific date and a specific number - which is exactly what lets you act early: negotiate terms, time a VAT payment, delay a purchase by a month - instead of reacting under pressure.

πŸ’· Do you know what your cash position looks like 12 weeks from now? If not, that's the first habit worth building.

Mark your calendar: 1 April 2028.

That's when Companies House's accounts filing reforms officially take effect, giving UK companies 21 months to prepare.

Confirmed on 9 June 2026, here's what's changing:

πŸ“Š Small companies and micro-entities will need to file a full profit & loss account, although there's a concession: you'll be able to opt out of having it published on the public register
πŸ’» All accounts must be filed using commercial software in iXBRL format, Companies House is closing its web and paper filing routes for accounts
πŸ“‰ Abridged accounts are being phased out
πŸ” Tighter rules on audit exemption claims and how accounts get submitted

21 months sounds like a long runway. It isn't, once you factor in choosing software, setting up a presenter account, and getting your team ready.

We've broken down exactly what's changing and what to do now πŸ‘‡
