VAT registration — it’s one of those things a lot of construction business owners either panic about or completely ignore.

Here’s what you actually need to know. 👇

You MUST register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a 12 month rolling period.

But here’s where it gets interesting — you CAN register voluntarily even if you’re under that threshold.

And for some businesses, that’s actually a smart move.

Why? Because if your clients are VAT registered themselves, they can claim it back anyway. So you registering doesn’t cost them anything — but it means you can reclaim VAT on everything you spend. Materials. Equipment. Fuel.

On the flip side, if your customers are members of the public or small businesses who can’t reclaim VAT, registering early could make you look more expensive than your competitors.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer — which is exactly why it’s worth talking it through properly.

Imagine running your construction business without constantly worrying about the paperwork.

No more wondering whether your CIS returns have been filed.
No more last-minute scrambles for VAT deadlines.
No more lying awake wondering how much tax you’ll owe at the end of the year.

Instead…

🏗️ You know exactly what your business is making.
🏗️ Your bookkeeping is up to date.
🏗️ Your tax bills are planned for, not a surprise.
🏗️ You can focus on winning jobs and running sites, knowing the finances are under control.

That’s exactly what I help construction business owners achieve.

I work with contractors, subcontractors and construction companies to take the stress out of the finances, keep everything compliant, and give them the confidence to grow their business.

Because your time is better spent on site than buried in paperwork.

If you’re ready to stop worrying about the numbers and start focusing on building your business, let’s have a chat. 👷‍♂️📊

🏗️ **Construction contractors – don't get caught out!**

A quick reminder if you're registered for CIS...

Even if you **haven't paid any subcontractors** during the month, you may still need to submit a **nil CIS return**.

Missing a nil return can lead to unnecessary penalties, so it's worth making sure it's filed on time to keep everything compliant.

If you're unsure whether this applies to your business or need help with your CIS returns, feel free to get in touch. I'm always happy to help! 😊

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is used within the UK construction sector

“I’ll sort the paperwork when this job finishes…”

If you’re in construction, I bet you’ve said this at least once.

The problem is, one job turns into the next… and before you know it, you’ve got months of receipts in the van, CIS statements missing, bookkeeping that’s fallen behind, and tax deadlines getting uncomfortably close.

Putting it off can cost you more than you realise:
🔨 Time spent searching for paperwork instead of earning.
💷 Missed expenses that could reduce your tax bill.
⚠️ Late filing penalties and unnecessary stress.
📊 No clear idea of how profitable each job actually is.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I help construction businesses stay on top of their bookkeeping, CIS, VAT, payroll and accounts, so you can spend more time on-site and less time buried in paperwork.

What’s the one admin job you’ve been putting off because you’re too busy getting the work done?
