As the Director of Financial Freedom®, I don't incorporate care home fees into our plans. Why? Because it can utterly decimate your financial blueprint. Dear friends,

I write this with a heavy heart to share a deeply personal and urgent matter. My dear friend Ellen Roome has been living through an unimaginable pain since her young son, Jools, tragically took his own life. Jools had his whole life ahead of him, but something drove him to this devastating decision.

In her quest for closure and understanding, Ellen faces the heartbreaking reality that she cannot access Jools’ social media accounts to see what he was viewing or experiencing in his final days. This crucial access could provide her with the answers and peace she so desperately needs.

I urge you to sign this petition, which calls for the right of parents to review their children’s social media accounts after such tragic events. This isn’t just for Ellen, but for every parent who might find themselves in this unthinkable situation.

I found myself in a moment of deep reflection on Sunday evening, following a poignant call with a client. The conversation, laden with emotion, led me to a moment of personal vulnerability as I grappled with the profound impact of their words.

Here’s the story behind this.

Years ago, I had the privilege of assisting M&C with their mortgage and setting up crucial life and critical illness cover. M introduced me to his mother, B, in 2007. We embarked on a journey of lifestyle financial planning, from updating her will to establishing trusts for her grandchildren. It was an incredible transformation to witness - B, realizing she had ample resources, started embracing life more fully. Her adventures grew bolder and more frequent, shedding the guilt of diminishing the kids’ inheritance, much to M’s initial dismay.

The ripples of impact extended to B’s daughter and husband, with whom I also had the chance to work, further weaving these familial financial narratives together. When B had excess capital, I was there to deliver cheques to her children, a testament to her desire to see them enjoy her legacy in her lifetime.

The investment trusts set up for the grandchildren have since blossomed, enabling them to make significant life purchases, like homes (mortgage advice provided by my team & I) and cars, as they turned 25.

However, life’s unpredictability showed its face when M’s wife, C, was diagnosed with cancer. The critical illness cover we arranged played its part, easing financial strains, but tragically, C passed away in September 2022. And this weekend, M followed, leaving us in his sleep at the young age of 58.

B, in her profound sorrow, reached out to me with the news, expressing a pain no mother should bear. Her words deeply moved me, and in that moment, after our call, I allowed myself to feel the weight of this loss.

I’ve since reached out to all those connected to this story, sharing in the collective mourning and reflection.

This experience is a stark reminder of life’s fragility. To lose someone in their 50s is an unspeakable tragedy. It underscores a message I often share: seize every moment.

Our lives aren’t rehearsals, but live performances, each day a scene we won’t get to play again.

Let’s embrace each moment with the zest and zeal it deserves. Let’s live fully, love deeply, and make our time here count.
