Busy doesn't always mean profitable!

One of the biggest mistakes hospitality start-ups make is pricing too low in the hope of attracting more customers and keeping them returning. As Rhys explains, smart menu pricing is key to building a profitable restaurant, café or hospitality business from day one.

Starting a hospitality business? If you'd benefit from more practical finance tips like this, our Finance Foundations for New Hospitality Business Owners interactive online course is the perfect place to start. We're offering it completely free to the first 15 sign-ups. Simply drop us a message to claim your spot!

In our recent newsletter, we delved into the latest research from VisitBritain, which is a welcome reminder that demand for travel and hospitality remains strong!

According to VisitBritain's May 2026 Domestic Sentiment Tracker, 77% of UK adults are planning to take an overnight trip within the UK over the next 12 months. Even more encouragingly, domestic holiday intentions have remained remarkably stable compared with last year, despite continued economic uncertainty.

The positive outlook isn't limited to domestic tourism either. VisitBritain forecasts that the UK will welcome 45.5 million international visitors during 2026,
generating an estimated £35.7 billion of spending. This represents growth of 4% in visitor numbers and 7% in visitor spending compared with 2025.

As we head into the peak summer season, businesses that deliver great customer experiences and make the most of local tourism opportunities will be well placed to benefit from both staycation demand and growing international visitor numbers. Make sure you sign up to our newsletter for more encouraging and interesting articles like this!

Hospitality businesses continue to face increasing pressure on their margins, with rising food costs, higher wages and increasing business rates all adding to the challenge. On top of that, the UK has one of the highest VAT rates for hospitality in Europe at 20% (for comparison, Germany's rate is 8%!).

The temporary reduction to 5% VAT on children's meals this summer is a really encouraging step. It demonstrates that the infrastructure is already in place to support lower VAT rates, and shows that positive change is possible.

That's why the campaign matters: It highlights the opportunity for long-term VAT reform that could help hospitality businesses invest, grow & continue serving their local communities for years to come. While many of these challenges are outside an owner's control, profitability is still achievable. The businesses that consistently succeed are those that understand their numbers, plan ahead, control costs, monitor margins and make informed decisions throughout the year.

Good financial management won't remove external pressures, but it can put you in the strongest possible position to weather them and build a more resilient, profitable business. If you’d like to support the VAT is the Problem campaign, sign the petition through the link in our bio.
