The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says small firms are being left behind by the current skills system, with rising employment costs forcing many to cut back on training.

The FSB is calling for changes including:

🔹 Easier access to suitable training and providers
🔹 Better career matchmaking between young people and employers
🔹 A more small business-friendly apprenticeship system

With small businesses playing a vital role in creating opportunities for young people, the FSB says the skills system needs to better reflect their needs.

📢 Important update for those moving onto Making Tax Digital (MTD)
If you have moved onto MTD for Income Tax, you may notice a change when checking your HMRC account.

HMRC may transfer your Self-Assessment balance across to the MTD system.

This means your previous Self-Assessment view could show ‘nothing to pay’, while the outstanding amount appears within your MTD account instead.

⚠️ This does not necessarily mean the amount has been paid or is no longer due, it may simply have been transferred to the MTD system.

So, if you're checking what you owe HMRC, make sure you're looking in the correct place.

💷 Could your business be owed money from HMRC?

If you were eligible for Employment Allowance but didn’t claim it, you may not have missed your chance.

Eligible businesses can claim Employment Allowance for up to four previous tax years – potentially reducing historic employer National Insurance bills and, in some cases, resulting in money being offset against other HMRC liabilities or repaid.

But eligibility rules have changed over the years, so knowing whether you could claim isn’t always straightforward.
