Landlords, more changes are coming your way...

For years, rental income has been taxed in the same way as most other forms of income. If you were a basic rate taxpayer, you paid 20%. Higher rate taxpayers paid 40%, and additional rate taxpayers paid 45%. However, from 6 April 2027, that is set to change significantly.

The government has introduced a completely separate set of Income Tax rates for property income, meaning landlords will pay more tax on rental profits than employees pay on their employment income. For many property investors, this represents one of the most significant tax changes in recent years.

We have been banging on about MTD for income tax for months... years! But the first quarter period end is looming.

From 6 April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 are now required to:

✅ Keep digital records
✅ Use MTD-compatible software
✅ Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
✅ File a final year-end declaration

If you're affected and haven't started preparing yet, now is the time!!!!! Waiting until the last minute could lead to unnecessary stress, rushed software decisions, and disruption to your business.

Important update for company directors!!

The planned Companies House filing reforms have been delayed until 1 April 2028, giving businesses an extra year to prepare.

The changes will include:
✅ Small companies and micro-entities having to file profit and loss accounts
✅ Mandatory filing through software in iXBRL format
✅ The end of abridged accounts
✅ Stronger audit exemption declarations
✅ Filing all parts of accounts together
✅ Reduced flexibility to shorten accounting periods

Before anyone panics, if you already use accounting software or work with an accountant, you may not need to do much at all. The additional time means there's an opportunity to review your processes and make sure everything is in place well before the deadline.

Neil has been out supporting several golf days lately including Brilliant Commercial & Industrial Cleaning Group golf day with Derby County Community Trust where we sponsored a hole. Friday he was at Over The Wall Camp golf day where we sponsored hole 11 and Neil managed to win the Nearest the Line competition. Great days and supported by great teams... well, the golf might not have been up to Masters standards but they had a good laugh at least!

Jenny attended the Marketing Derby event this morning, here are her thoughts:

"I really enjoyed this mornings Marketing Derby event in conjunction with Derby Book Festival. I thought Ben Aitken was funny, engaging and thought provoking. I wish now I had taken the time to stand in line and get a book signed, maybe next time.

As he spoke I scribbled down something he said...

"Being negative doesn't get anyone anything or anywhere."

How true is that?!? Ben was talking about people putting down the places we live and getting consumed by the negativity. But isn't it true that it is easy to slip into negative when speaking and discussing anything... the place we live, the experiences we have, our work places, and a current "hot" topic of conversation... the weather!! Maybe if we tried to focus more on the positive we might find more joy in everyday life?

I'm glad I had the chance to start my day with a sausage muffin, coffee and positivity."
