Have you been putting off your bookkeeping because it feels overwhelming?

You are not alone.

Many business owners start their business because they are passionate about what they do, not because they enjoy spreadsheets and tax returns.

If your accounts are sitting on your to do list causing stress, it might be time to ask for support.

At AFR Accountancy Services Ltd, I help busy business owners understand their numbers in a simple and friendly way without the jargon.

So you can spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time focusing on growing your business.

What is the one thing in your business that you keep putting off?

Running a business can feel overwhelming at times especially when you are trying to manage clients, family life and finances all at once.

One thing I always remind my clients is this:

You do not need to understand everything about tax and accounts to run a successful business.

That is what support is for.

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date little and often can help reduce stress, avoid surprises and make year end accounts much easier.

Even setting aside 10 minutes a week to check your bank transactions or upload receipts can make a huge difference.

Be kind to yourself. Business is a journey and nobody gets everything perfect.

It has been a little quiet on here recently.

Life and business have both been very full and sometimes social media has to take a back seat whilst you focus on the people and work in front of you.

Over the last few months I have been supporting clients with bookkeeping, accounts, tax returns and lots of behind the scenes business support whilst also balancing work, family life and volunteering commitments.

One thing I am constantly reminded of is this.

So many business owners are carrying far more than people realise.

Running a business is not just about numbers. It is about confidence, courage and trying to hold everything together whilst still showing up every day.

That is why AFR Accountancy Services Ltd will always aim to be approachable friendly and reassuring.

No judgement.
No complicated jargon.
Just support from someone who genuinely cares.

If you are feeling behind with your bookkeeping or overwhelmed with your accounts, please know you are not alone.

Small bit of good news for business owners and employees using their own car for work 🚗

HMRC has announced that the approved mileage allowance rate is increasing from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, backdated to April 2026. The rate above 10,000 miles remains at 25p per mile.

If you regularly travel for business, this could make a real difference towards the cost of fuel, insurance, servicing and wear and tear.

It is also a good reminder to:
• Keep accurate mileage records
• Separate business and personal journeys
• Make sure mileage claims are updated correctly in your bookkeeping software

Sometimes small changes like this can easily get missed but they can save money over the year.

I had the pleasure of helping organise the Womens Day Festival in Derby at the Museum of Making as part of the Womens Day Derby team, where I serve as Treasurer.

Seeing so many women come together to share stories, support each other and celebrate the strength of women in our community was truly inspiring. There was such a positive and uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.

Events like this remind me how powerful it is when women support one another and create spaces where everyone feels welcome.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered and helped make the day such a success.

I feel very grateful to be part of such an incredible community here in Derby.

Ramadan is a special month for Muslims. It is a time for reflection, prayer and thinking about how we can help others.

One of the most important parts of Ramadan is giving Zakat. Zakat means giving 2.5 percent of our eligible wealth each year to support people who may be struggling. It helps provide food, support and dignity to those who need it most.

Many Muslims choose to give their Zakat during Ramadan because it is a time that encourages kindness, generosity and looking after others.

As a business owner and accountant, I also like to remind people that if a company donates to a registered charity, the donation can be deducted from profits before Corporation Tax is calculated.

The real purpose of Zakat is simply to help others and make a positive difference in someone’s life.

My heart is with everyone in Dubai right now, especially families who are feeling worried and unsettled. My son is there and it has been a frightening and uncertain time for us.

I am keeping you all in my prayers and truly hoping things calm down very soon. May everyone be protected and kept safe.

Tax return deadline reminder

The 31 January deadline is coming up and if you are feeling a bit stressed, you are not alone.

If you are doing your tax return yourself, here are a few gentle tips to make it feel more manageable
1. Focus on getting it submitted on time using the best information you have
2. Gather the basics first P60 or P45, P11D, self employed income totals, bank interest, dividends
3. Use your bank statements to help fill any gaps if you cannot find every receipt
4. Keep expenses simple in headings like travel, phone and internet, software, professional fees, training linked to your work
5. If you cannot pay straight away, still submit the return, then speak to HMRC about a payment plan

Feeling shocked by your Self Assessment bill and then seeing another payment due in July, you are not alone.

Here is what is happening in simple terms.

When you do your tax return, HMRC works out what you owe for LAST tax year.

But if your bill is over £1,000, HMRC often also asks for something called Payment on Account.

That is an advance payment towards THIS tax year.

That is why the January bill can feel so high. It can include
1 Your remaining tax for last year
2 Plus the first advance payment for this year

Then the July payment is usually the second advance payment for this year.

So it is not a random extra bill.
It is HMRC spreading next year tax into two smaller payments.

If your income is lower this year, you may be able to reduce the July payment so you do not overpay.
But it needs to be done carefully.

If you want me to explain your bill in plain English, send me a message and I will talk you through it step by step.
