Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is no longer coming. It's here.

If you're a sole trader or landlord earning over Β£50,000, you're already in scope. Digital record keeping is now a legal requirement - not a suggestion.

The Β£30,000 threshold arrives April 2027, which sounds like a long way away. It isn't.

If you're not sure whether this affects you yet, or you're not sure what you need to do about it, get in touch. We'd rather help you get ahead of it than pick up the pieces after.

πŸ‘‡ Has your accountant spoken to you about MTD yet?

It's the start of July - here are the dates your business needs in the diary this month.
The 6th is the P11D deadline for benefits in kind - if you employ staff and provide any perks, this is your last chance to report them the traditional way before the rules change next April.

The 31st is the second payment on account for Self Assessment. If you're a sole trader or director, this could be due - check your HMRC account now so it's not a surprise.
Any questions about what's due and when? We're here.

We get it. You've been managing your books on a spreadsheet for years and it's worked fine.

But HMRC has changed the rules.

From April 2026, digital records aren't optional for sole traders earning over Β£50,000. Your spreadsheet can't submit quarterly updates to HMRC automatically. And if you get it wrong, the penalties start immediately - even for honest mistakes.

This isn't about making things complicated. It's about making sure you're not caught out.

Not sure where you stand? Drop us a message and we'll talk it through.

πŸ‘‡ Are you still using a spreadsheet to manage your business finances?

Making Tax Digital is here β€” and it affects thousands of sole traders and landlords! πŸ’»

From 6th April 2026, if your gross income from self-employment or property is over Β£50,000, the way you report to HMRC has changed.

Here's what's now required πŸ‘‡

βœ… Digital record-keeping using HMRC-compatible software
βœ… Quarterly updates submitted to HMRC
βœ… A final declaration by 31st January each year
πŸ“Œ Key things to know:
πŸ”Ή It's based on gross income, not profit
πŸ”Ή Income between Β£30,000–£50,000? MTD applies to you from April 2027 β€” start preparing now
πŸ”Ή No penalty points for late quarterly updates in year one β€” but late payment penalties still apply

The right software makes this really straightforward β€” and it actually gives you a much clearer view of your finances all year round! πŸ“Š

The 2026/27 tax year is now underway, and this April brings some of the most significant changes in recent years. Here is what you need to know:

πŸ“‹ Personal allowance & thresholds remain frozen at Β£12,570 and Β£50,270 β€” meaning any pay rise could push you into a higher tax band through fiscal drag.

πŸ“Š Dividend tax rates have increased to 10.75% (basic rate) and 35.75% (higher rate) β€” worth reviewing if you operate through a limited company.

πŸ’» Making Tax Digital for ITSA is now live. If you are a sole trader or landlord with gross income above Β£50,000, quarterly digital reporting to HMRC is now mandatory. Annual Self Assessment returns alone are no longer sufficient.

πŸ“Œ BADR rate rises β€” Business Asset Disposal Relief now attracts CGT at 18%, up from 14%.
If any of these changes affect you, please do get in touch. Proactive planning now can make a material difference to your position this year.
