Financial Planning Friday
This week I've been working with a few clients that are approaching retirement. They are looking for advice around when they can afford to retire. It's a complex question with lots of potential answers, but the truth is that the money is just one aspect of the retirement decision, I always want clients to be able to answer these three questions:
1) Have you got enough (money)?
2) Have you had enough (of work)?
3) Have you got enough to do?
Unless you can convincingly answer all three of these I often suggest clients put some more time in to the thinking phase. Sure, you might be financially ready to retire, and I can certainly help build a plan for this part, but too many people don't put enough effort into planning these other elements of retirement.
I once had a client who, despite reaching what we would normally think of as retirement age, still had in his words "at bit more to give to work" and this was a great way of thinking about the question.
So are you ready to retire?
Have you got a plan in place?
and do you know how you're going to spend the additional 50 or so hours in your diary....
