“What do I owe you for your time?” ⏱️
This question is music to my ears because:
1) It shows that the client understands that the service I am offering is my time. It may be only take a few minutes to convey my knowledge and advice, but it took years of exams and experience to gain that knowledge – that has value.
2) I know that they appreciated my advice and guidance and thought it deserved a monetary value – I know my advice has been valuable to them.
But my answer is nearly always “nothing”! 🤯
So why don’t I charge specifically for my time? Does that undervalue the points above? 🤷♂️
⏱️ Usually I’m asked this question after an initial consultation – this is offered for free to establish how exactly I may (or may not) be able to help. I firmly believe that this initial conversation needs to be ‘no obligation’ so that both client and adviser can talk freely about potential solutions, without consideration of costs or products.
⏱️ For existing clients, they pay me fees for their financial products – so I owe them that time to demonstrate the ‘value for money’ I provide.
⏱️ “What goes around comes around” & “looks after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves” – two analogies that explain why I don’t worry about making profit from every conversation I have. I know that if I do the right thing, those clients (and their family, friends and contacts), will come back to me when they need one of my financial products.
I’m in this game, and on your side, for a long time yet!
My time will come, so I am happy to bide it….
(feel free to add more time puns…) 😂
