Housing prices in Dumfries and Galloway

The latest findings from the ONS:

🏡 The average house price in Dumfries and Galloway was £172,000 in August 2026 (provisional), up 3.9% from August 2025. This was higher than the rise in Scotland (2.9%) over the same period.

🏡 Private rent prices rose to an average of £556 in September 2026, an annual increase of 5.6% from £527 in September 2025. Across Scotland, the average rental price changed little over the year.

🏡 The average price paid by first-time buyers was £145,000 in August 2026 (provisional). This was 4.2% higher than the average of £139,000 in August 2025 (revised).

🏡 For homes bought with a mortgage, the average house price was £169,000 in August 2026 (provisional). This was 4.0% higher than the average of £162,000 in August 2025 (revised).

Giving children the best start in life 👶

The birth of a new baby can put financial pressure on household budgets, but there’s a wide range of financial support available from the Scottish Government to ensure children have the best start in life.

Families receiving Universal Credit or certain benefits could be eligible to more than £2,600 in financial support during pregnancy and their child's first year of life, helping with the costs of welcoming a new baby.

Expectant families can apply for the Best Start Foods pre-paid card as soon as they find out they are pregnant, helping ease the costs of buying healthy food.

More than 600,000 families have cut their childcare costs with Tax-Free Childcare HMRC reveals, as it encourages others to sign up.

Tax-Free Childcare helps working families with their childcare costs by saving up to £2,000 per year for each of their children up to the age of 11 or £4,000 per year up to aged 16 if the child is disabled.

Latest figures show 601,620 families received a share of £55.7 million in government top-ups in June with each family getting an average of £93 added to their Tax-Free Childcare savings pot. For every £8 parents deposit in their child’s account, the government tops it up by £2.

Starting early is key to less stress around Self Assessment

More than a quarter of people said they experience anxiety before financial deadlines, HMRC reveals ahead of World Mental Health Day (10 October), encouraging Self Assessment customers to start their tax return now.

The deadline to submit a Self Assessment tax return and pay any tax due for the 2025 to 2026 tax year is 31 January 2027.

Millions of Self Assessment customers choose to file their tax return well ahead of the January deadline each year which they can do on GOV.UK.

Last year, more than 24,000 customers filed theirs on World Mental Health Day.
