Last week, we hosted our Graduate Day for our new trainees who will be joining us at the end of the summer. The day brought together current trainees, managers, and partners to share their experiences at EQ, their career journeys, and how they’ve built their pathways in accounting.

We were also joined by CEO Craig Nicol and COO Caroline McKenna, who shared more about what EQ represents, our ambitions as a firm, and our vision for the future.

Senior L&D Advisor Chiara Di Ponio explored the different career pathways in more depth and kicked off the day with a “people bingo” icebreaker, where we learned that Partner Greg Stapley is the only person in the group who has run not just one, but three marathons!

The group then split into breakout sessions to hear more about colleagues’ career experiences and had the opportunity to ask questions about life at EQ ahead of joining.

The day concluded with a social evening at Lane7, where everyone enjoyed some relaxed competition with pool and shuffleboard.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming our new trainees to EQ at the end of the summer! 🧡

Diversification is becoming a core part of modern farm business strategy.

With ongoing pressure from commodity prices, changing support payments, rising costs, and climate challenges, many farm businesses are increasingly turning to non-traditional income streams to build resilience and maintain profitability.

A strong example is one of Partner Scott Greig’s clients, Banchory Farm in Fife. Where traditional farming has been successfully complemented by holiday accommodation and environmental initiatives, showing how existing assets can be used to unlock long-term value.

By diversifying your farm, you open doors to multiple income streams and opportunities. However, success requires careful planning, particularly around tax, planning permission, labour, and long-term land use.

Members of our Leisure Team, Nicola Rourke and David Morrison, recently attended a board meeting at client Dalhousie Castle, where they had the opportunity to see first-hand the results of the hotel’s extensive £5 million refurbishment programme.

Having supported Owner, Michael Clark, and the wider team throughout the project, it was particularly rewarding to experience the transformation in person and see the vision brought to life. The investment has revitalised this iconic Scottish hotel, creating an impressive space for guests to enjoy.

Alongside Michael, the meeting brought together a trusted team of advisers, including Lindsay Darroch and Jennifer Davidson of Gilson Gray LLP and Richard Ellison of 7 Hospitality Management. It was a great example of how collaboration between legal, operational, and financial advisers can help businesses successfully deliver ambitious projects.

Nicola Rourke, Manager, said:

"It has been fantastic to see the refurbishment completed and the hotel reopened to guests. Having worked with the team throughout the project, I found it incredibly rewarding to see the investment and transformation firsthand. Seeing the results in person really highlights the scale of the project and the commitment of everyone involved. This is a great example of the value that can be achieved when business owners are supported by a strong team of trusted advisers, all working together towards a common goal."

We are proud to have played a part in this exciting journey and look forward to continuing to support Dalhousie Castle and the wider group as they build on this significant investment.
