What’s making your business harder to run than it needs to be?

It might be decisions taking too long, too much still coming back to you, clunky processes, disconnected systems, or a bigger team that hasn’t created the capacity you expected.

These things don’t always look significant on their own.

But over time, they can cost you time, margin, capacity, and headspace.

Swipe for 7 things worth looking for in your business and what they could be costing you.

Revenue can tell you what’s selling. But it doesn’t necessarily tell you what’s worth doing more of.

As your business grows, it becomes increasingly useful to understand profitability by service, product, customer type, channel, or location, because the biggest revenue generator isn’t always the strongest contributor to profit.

Those distinctions can shape what you invest in, what you price differently, and what you choose to scale next.

Before asking, “How do we grow this?”, ask: “Is this really one of the most profitable parts of the business?”

Final year at university and curious about a career in accounting? We’re hiring two paid Student Project Assistants to join Ashton McGill for 4-8 hours a week.

You’ll work on real projects, build practical experience, and get an inside look at the technology, systems, people, and thinking behind a modern accounting business.

And you don’t need to be studying accounting.

We care much more about curiosity, an interest in business, confidence with technology and data, and a willingness to get involved.

Your accounts can tell you that revenue is up, profit is down, or cash is tighter. But that still leaves the more useful question: why?

The real value comes from understanding what’s driving the movement underneath the headline numbers.

Maybe margins are being squeezed.
Maybe one service is performing better than another.
Maybe a client is taking more time than their fee justifies.
Maybe you’ve invested ahead of growth.

Once you understand the drivers, the numbers become much more useful.

They can help you decide what to change, what to protect, and where to focus next.

The point isn’t simply to know your numbers. It’s to know your business better because of them.

What do you want your business to make possible? It sounds like a simple question, but it changes how you think about growth.

Because a bigger revenue number isn’t automatically a better outcome.

You might want to grow a team, expand into new markets, or build something you can eventually sell.

Or success might mean stronger margins, more control over your time, paying yourself properly, or creating a business that doesn’t depend on you every hour of the day.

There isn’t one right version.

But when you know what you’re building towards, your numbers can start helping you get there.

That’s the kind of growth we think is worth pursuing.

Your business keeps evolving. Is your accounting support keeping pace?

As your business grows, the questions you need help answering can change. You may need more timely information, a deeper understanding of performance, or someone to help you think through the financial impact of what comes next.

Swipe for the five questions to ask yourself to work out whether your accounting support still fits the business you’re building.

Save this audit and come back to it before your next review with your accountant.

If you run a charity, CIC or social enterprise, your numbers should help prove the impact you’re making, not get in the way of it.

But when you’re juggling grants, restricted funds, project costs and different reporting requirements, proving where the money went can become a job in itself.

The right financial setup makes that clearer.

Every fund tracked. Every project visible. The information ready when your board or funders need it.

So you can report with confidence, show the impact of your work and keep more of your attention on the mission.

Explore how we help charities, CICs and social enterprises track every fund clearly, report with confidence and focus on the work that matters.

There are certain moments you reach as a founder where the questions you’re asking about the business start to change.

At first, you mostly want reassurance that everything is being handled properly.

Then the business grows, there’s more going on, and you want to properly understand how it’s performing and where the money is going.

Eventually, the decisions get bigger too.
Can we afford the hire?
Should we change our pricing?
Is now the right time to invest?
What would growth actually require from us financially?

The support that was right for the business at one stage won’t necessarily be enough for the next.

And that’s how we think accounting should work.

Not asking you to fit into a box, but understanding where the business is now, what you’re trying to achieve next, and giving you the financial visibility, understanding and structure to get there with confidence.

Which of these three moments feels closest to where your business is right now?

A £5k monthly retainer can look like one of your agency’s strongest accounts. But the invoice only tells you what the client pays.

It doesn’t show the extra revisions, calls, reactive requests or senior time that silently get absorbed along the way.

And when that happens month after month, a client that looks valuable on paper can be delivering a very different margin in reality.

That’s why knowing revenue by client isn’t enough.

You need to understand what each client actually costs you to serve, so you can spot scope creep, price work properly and make better decisions about where your team’s time goes.

This is how you go from filling the agency with work to filling it with work that makes commercial sense.

Explore how we help agencies understand the true profitability of every client.
