North East nightlife closures show challenges for pubs and restaurants 😔

A rash of pub and restaurant closures in Newcastle and the wider North East has been described as “desperately sad” by a new organisation representing the city’s nightlife sector.

Earlier this week the popular Sohe restaurant in Jesmond announced it was closing its doors, and closures have also been signalled at Paros, in Heaton, and La Famiglia, in Denton, while the operators of the STACK sites have dropped previously announced plans for locations in Whitley Bay and Durham.

STACK said that the “wider pressures affecting the hospitality and leisure industry” were part of the reason for abandoning the project.

Former Newcastle City Council leader Nick Kemp, who is now head of operations at The Core - Newcastle Hospitality Association, said: “It is desperately sad to keep reading about another Newcastle hospitality business closing its doors. Behind every closure are years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, and businesses that have created jobs, brought people together and given our city so many memorable experiences.

“Hospitality is vital to Newcastle’s economy and identity, yet businesses are facing a perfect storm of rising energy bills, employer National Insurance, food costs and squeezed consumer spending. Too often, the sector’s contribution is taken for granted and its challenges overlooked."
