⚠️ Scam Alert: Stay vigilant

HMRC is warning pensioners to be extra cautious as Winter Fuel Payment recoveries begin.

Scammers often use fake emails, texts, letters and phone calls pretending to be HMRC in an attempt to steal personal information or money.

For many people, any repayment will simply be handled through a PAYE tax code adjustment, meaning there is often no need to contact HMRC directly.

If something doesn’t feel right, pause before clicking links or sharing details. When in doubt, check directly through official HMRC channels.

Please consider sharing this to help protect friends and family.

Good news for small businesses...

New government procurement rules could create more opportunities for SMEs, with departments now setting direct spending targets worth over £7.4 billion a year by 2028.

For the first time, departments will also publish annual progress updates to improve accountability and help ensure smaller businesses get a bigger share of public sector contracts.

With SMEs previously receiving just 20% of direct public sector procurement spending, many will be hoping this marks a positive step forward.

Late payments can be incredibly damaging for small businesses, affecting cash flow, growth plans, and causing unnecessary stress.

The government has now announced stronger measures aimed at tackling the issue, including:

✔️ New powers for the Small Business Commissioner to investigate poor payment practices
✔️ Fines for large firms that repeatedly pay suppliers late
✔️ A proposed 60-day payment cap for large businesses paying smaller suppliers
✔️ Mandatory interest on late payments at 8% above the Bank of England base rate

The government says late payments currently cost the UK economy around £11 billion each year.

For many small businesses, getting paid on time isn’t just frustrating, it’s essential.

When your business starts doing well, whether to reinvest profits or give yourself a pay rise becomes a real question.

Reinvesting profits could mean:

• Better systems
• New equipment
• Marketing
• Extra support
• Long-term growth

Paying yourself more means:

• Rewarding your hard work
• Improving personal finances
• Actually enjoying the results of running a business 👏

The truth?
Most successful business owners end up balancing both. Growth is important… but so is paying yourself properly.

If you need help understanding what your business can realistically afford we can help.

New va**ng duty rules are on the way.

HMRC is urging va**ng-related businesses to register now for the new Va**ng Products Duty (VPD) and Va**ng Duty Stamps Scheme ahead of changes coming into effect from October 2026.

Manufacturers, importers, warehouses and others in the supply chain may all be affected.

With approvals potentially taking 45 working days or more, early preparation is key.

If your business operates within the va**ng industry, now is the time to understand your responsibilities and get ahead of the changes.

Mileage allowance rates could finally be changing - it's been a while!

The government has confirmed it will review approved business mileage rates for the first time since 2011.

With fuel, insurance and maintenance costs rising significantly over the years, many employees and business owners have been left covering the difference themselves.

The review will focus on supporting workers who rely on their vehicles for work, while fuel duty also remains frozen until September.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on any updates that could impact businesses and employees alike.
