January might feel a long way off, but knowing what you’re likely to owe before the deadline arrives can make a big difference.

Because nobody wants a nasty surprise waiting for them after Christmas.

Having a clearer picture of your tax position now gives you time to plan, manage your cashflow and make informed decisions over the months ahead.

And that's one of the benefits of working with an accountant throughout the year – rather than only thinking about your accounts when a deadline is looming.

If you're not sure what your next tax bill might look like, perhaps September is the month to find out.

If you need assistance with tax bills or any other aspect of accounting get in touch with us on 01323 576446 for advice and appointments.

Hello September! 🍂

There’s something about September that always feels like a bit of a reset.

Summer holidays come to an end, routines return and, for many businesses, things start to shift up a gear again.

So before the final few months of the year disappear in a blur, why not make September the month you take a fresh look at your business too?

Throughout our September Reset, we'll be sharing simple prompts to get you thinking about your numbers, including profitability, cashflow, costs, tax planning and what you want your business to achieve before the year is out.

No complicated accountancy speak. Just useful questions that could help you understand where your business is now – and make better decisions about where it's going next.

And, of course, you don't have to figure it all out on your own. We're always here to help.

Here's to a productive September! 🍂📊

It’s certainly been a summer for sunshine, seaside trips and plenty of ice creams! ☀️🍦

And for many businesses, a good summer can also mean more customers, more orders and a much busier diary.

But here’s the important question…

Has being busier actually made your business more profitable?

Turnover is only part of the picture. Rising costs, additional staffing, increased stock and changing margins can all mean that a bumper few months don’t necessarily translate into a bumper profit.

As we head into September, it’s a great time to look at your numbers and ask:

🍦 Which products or services have been most profitable?
🍦 Have your margins changed?
🍦 Where have costs increased?
🍦 What can you learn from the summer months?
🍦 And what could you do differently for the rest of the year?

Your accounts shouldn’t just tell you what happened – they can help you make better decisions about what happens next.

If you’re not sure what your numbers are telling you, that’s where we can help. Call us on 01323 576446 for appointments.

September is nearly here. Is your business ready for the next few months?

August is fast drawing to a close and, for many businesses, September brings a definite shift in gear.

Holidays finish. Customers return. Projects restart. The final few months of the year suddenly don't seem very far away.

And before we know it, January will be here too.

But good accounting isn't about waiting for a tax deadline and then looking backwards.

Now is a great time to look forwards.

How has your business performed so far this year?
Do you know what your likely tax position is?
Is your cashflow where you expected it to be?
Are your costs creeping upwards?
Could you be making better use of your profits?
And what do you want your business to achieve before the year is out?

Over the next few months, we'll be sharing some practical prompts to help you get closer to your numbers, make better-informed decisions and head towards January feeling prepared rather than panicked.

And remember – you don't have to work all of this out alone.

A good accountant shouldn't simply tell you what happened. They should help you decide what happens next. That's where we come in!

Call us on 01323 576446 if you need a hand making the best of your finances before the end of the year.

More than 750,000 young adults are yet to claim money held in matured Child Trust Funds – with the average account worth around £2,200.

Child Trust Funds were set up for children born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, giving them a financial asset when they reached adulthood. But years later, more than £1.6 billion is still sitting in unclaimed accounts.

There are plenty of reasons why funds may not have been claimed. Some young adults may not realise an account was opened for them, while others may simply not know where their account is held or how to access it.

The government has now launched a Child Trust Fund Taskforce, working with providers to help reunite more young people with their savings.

So, if you – or someone in your family – falls within the right age bracket, it could be well worth checking. You might have money waiting that you didn’t even know about!

Could better access to finance help your business grow?

The Government has announced significant changes designed to improve access to finance for small and medium-sized businesses across the UK.

At the heart of the reforms is an expansion of the British Business Bank’s Growth Guarantee Scheme, which provides lenders with a 70% government-backed guarantee on eligible business loans.

Under the changes:

• An additional £2 billion of SME lending per year is expected to be supported by 2028/29
• Loan terms of up to 10 years will be available for eligible loans of up to £1.1 million, increased from six years
• The business turnover eligibility limit will rise from £45 million to £54 million
• The scheme is expected to support around 20,000 businesses a year by 2028/29

For businesses considering investment, expansion, new technology or the next stage of growth, improved access to finance could create new opportunities.

Of course, accessing funding is only one part of the picture. Understanding what your business can comfortably afford, how borrowing fits into your wider plans and the potential impact on cash flow are equally important.

Could additional finance help unlock the next stage of growth for your business?

We'd all love to see more money in our pockets...

From 1 October, VAT on household electricity bills will be removed as part of the Government's latest measures aimed at easing the cost of living.

Currently charged at 5%, removing VAT is expected to save a typical household around £45 a year, although the amount you save will depend on how much electricity you use.

The measure will come into effect alongside the next Ofgem price cap and is being funded for this financial year through the cancellation of the £1.8 billion Digital ID programme.

The Government says further decisions on energy bills will be considered at the Budget.

But what do you think?

Will changes like this make a noticeable difference to your household finances – or does more need to be done?
