Did you know that your pension just became part of your estate. Here's what that means for you.

From April 2027, unused pension funds will be included in your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes for the first time.

If you're already in drawdown, this is worth paying attention to -- but it's not a reason to panic.

For years, pensions sat outside of your estate, making them one of the most tax-efficient assets you could pass on to your family. That's changing. But with the right plan in place, there's still plenty you can do to protect what you've built.

Key questions to ask yourself:

💰 Do you actually need your pension to live on, or do other assets cover your lifestyle?

👨‍👩‍👧 Who are you hoping to leave it to, and what tax position will they be in?

📋 Have you updated your expression of wishes with your pension provider recently?

Three retirement planning mistakes I see more than any other:

1. Underestimating how long retirement will last (30 years isn't unusual anymore)
2. Overlooking the tax on pension withdrawals
3. Leaving inheritance planning too late, especially with the pension IHT changes coming in April 2027
