Looking after our mental health and wellbeing is important, not just for one day, but throughout the year.

At JW Hinks, we recognise that everyone faces challenges at different times and that having someone to talk to, feeling supported and looking out for one another can make a real difference.

Throughout the year, we encourage our staff to come together through activities such as our summer BBQs, charity events and football tournaments. These are great opportunities to spend time together away from our day-to-day work and build relationships across the firm.

We also have four trained Mental Health First Aiders who are available to offer a listening ear and support to staff who may need someone to talk to.

World Mental Health Day is a reminder of the importance of looking after ourselves and those around us. Sometimes something as simple as checking in with someone or taking the time to listen can make all the difference.

This week is , and we’re celebrating our Payroll Team while also looking ahead to some of the changes coming to payroll.

With new requirements on the horizon, staying up to date and understanding what they mean for your business is important. Sally and the team are on hand to provide clear, practical guidance and help clients prepare for what’s ahead.

Payroll is one of those functions that can easily go unnoticed when everything runs smoothly. But behind every payslip are people making sure employees are paid accurately and on time, while keeping up with legislation, deadlines and ever-changing requirements.

HMRC data shows just how many taxpayers are still adjusting to the move to quarterly reporting.

đź“Š The figures at a glance:

• 864,000+ people are required to submit for MTD

• 436,000 filed their first quarterly update on time

• 428,000 are estimated to have missed the deadline

These figures highlight the scale of the change and the adjustment it represents for many self-employed people, sole traders and landlords.

Are you prepared for the first MTD deadline? ⏰

For sole traders or landlords earning more than ÂŁ50,000 from self-employment or property, your first Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax quarterly update is due by Friday 7 August 2026.

This update covers your income and expenses for the first three months of the 2026/27 tax year and must be submitted using Making Tax Digital-compatible software.

It has been a pleasure to welcome Zavira Abdoulvagabou to JW Hinks over the last year, as she completed her industrial placement as part of her BSc Accounting & Finance degree at Aston University.

From getting involved in day-to-day client work to learning from colleagues across the firm, Zavira has developed new skills, grown in confidence and gained a greater understanding of life in accountancy.

Our staff away day brought the team together for a day of learning, collaboration, and quality time together at Avery Fields Sports and Events.

We were pleased to be joined by Sunny Vara from Cybercy Group, who led an engaging AI workshop exploring how these tools are shaping the way we work, and how we can use them confidently, responsibly and with client care at the heart of everything we do.

Then the afternoon was filled with fun challenges that brought plenty of laughter, friendly competition, and great teamwork. It was brilliant to see everyone getting involved, encouraging each other, and having fun along the way.

Most importantly, it was a chance to strengthen relationships and creating shared memories as a team.
