Did you know there's no "pension" option on HMRC's VAT1 form?

If you've got a SIPP or SSAS pension investing directly in commercial property, VAT registration is often unavoidable — but the process isn't as simple as ticking a box.

A few things that trip people up:
🔹 Who needs to register–whether it's your pension provider's Trustee Company, you as a member-trustee, or a mix of both
🔹 Most SIPP/SSAS VAT registrations use the "Partnership" option on the VAT1 — not "Trust" (the latter is an common error to select)
🔹 Getting the wrong people listed on form VAT2 can cause real delays
🔹 You'll also need form VAT5L and 1614A (Option to Tax) alongside it

Get any of this wrong and it can delay your property acquisition — or cost you tens of thousands in VAT.

Check out how to register a SIPP or SSAS pension for VAT in our latest article, or get in touch with Associate Director, Iain Harris for a chat: https://ae-ca.co.uk/news/how-to-register-a-sipp-or-ssas-pension-for-vat

There's a new bird in town... and it's worth a chat!

As we celebrate five years of business, we decided to refresh our branding and logo that was initially designed by Tax Director James in 2020.

At the heart of the new design is a stonechat. Named for its distinctive call, the stonechat is chatty by nature (just like us). We're tax advisers and accountants, yes— but at the core of what we do is conversations. The kind where you actually feel heard, and leave with clarity.
The stonechat represents resilience, adaptability, and the kind of quiet vibrancy that doesn't need to shout to be noticed—the kind of accountancy firm we're trying to be.

The new logo and motifs are cleaner and sharper — a natural evolution rather than a reinvention. Say hello to the improved Anderson & Edwards. 🐦

There were some literal head banging moments whilst filming this, but we don’t think Jamie means what he says at the end of the video.. 👀

Tax Adviser, James Edwards gives us the highlights for INDIVIDUALS from the most recent UK budget:

📝 Nil Rate Band; Residential Nil Rate Band; £2.5mil Business Property Relief and Agricultural Property Relief are being frozen until 2031
↪️ £2.5mil Business Property Relief and Agricultural Property Relief will be transferable to spouses from April 2026
🏘️ New category of income - Property Income will be introduced with rates of 22%, 42% and 47% [England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland TBC]
🏠 Mortgage credit rate is increasing to 22%
💰 Savings income will have rates of 22%, 42% and 47% from April 2027
⭐️ Dividends tax rates [Basic + Higher Rates only] are increasing by 2% from April 26
...and breathe, for now. Given that the Inheritance Tax Relief rates have already increased from £1mil to £2.5mil since we filmed this, we’re expecting more details on these initial announcements have yet to come, particularly for Scotland.

Employees take note! ⚠️

This definitely proved to be a challenge, even for Tax Director Jamie. Here’s his best shot of summing up the recent budget announcement for EMPLOYEES in 60 secs~(with the help of edits by Marketing Manager ).

Key headlines:
📝 Personal allowance, higher rate bands and the additional rate bands, are all getting frozen until April 2031.
💰 Pension salary sacrifice (exc. NI) is getting restricted to £2,000 from 2029 [might not be restricted to pensions only, full details TBC]
💻 Work From Home tax relief is going to be applicable to those that have been reimbursed allowable costs from April ‘26.
⭐️ Image rights are getting treated as employment income from April 2027 (typically for sports stars etc.)
🏢 Enterprise management incentive schemes are going to be more widely available and have an extended timeframe to get involved.

Stay tuned for our budget summary for INDIVIDUALS 📋

It’s safe to say that 2025 brought many unexpected wins and challenges, but that just seems to be the beauty of running a small tax & accountancy firm. This year’s highlights included:

🗄️ Moving to a new office (even if it was 2 floors down in the same building)
🎓 Hiring our first CA Trainee
🏢 Welcoming new clients from a mix of industries
⚽️ Continuing another year of sponsorship with Watsonian Football Club (and celebrating their 150th anniversary!)
💼 Getting our head around another UK Budget announcement (with more than a few big changes to come)
🍼 Hearing that Dean and Rebecca are getting ready to welcome their 2nd child next year!

All in all, we're celebrating another year in business as we grow. But more importantly, we're wishing our clients, networks and partners a very happy Christmas and New Year when it comes - here's to 2026! 🥳🎉🥂

Does your business issue gift cards/vouchers? Or are you thinking about gifting vouchers to staff this Christmas? 🎁

The purpose of giving a gift card or voucher isn’t really to save tax, so VAT planning won’t be high on everyone’s list of priorities here. However, if you’re in a business that issues vouchers, make sure you understand which type you are selling and when your VAT payment should be made to HMRC: https://ae-ca.co.uk/news/does-vat-apply-to-vouchers-and-giftcards/

And, if you’re lucky enough to get a gift voucher this Christmas… do enjoy whatever it brings and leave the VAT questions for us (the greatest gift of all). 🤓🎄
