Making Tax Digital is being phased in for sole traders over the next three years, moving from a single annual self-assessment to four quarterly submissions plus a final return.

Figures will need to come directly from business bank statements rather than manual spreadsheets - so if you haven't opened a separate business account yet, we'd recommend doing so sooner rather than later.

"Payment on account" - one of those phrases that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean?

In short: it's HMRC asking you to pay some of next year's tax bill in advance, based on what you owed the year before. It's usually split into two instalments - one in January, one at the end of July.

If that's new to you, you're not alone. It trips up a lot of people the first time round, especially if no one's explained it clearly before.

The next instalment is due 31st July - if you're unsure what yours looks like, it's always worth checking in with us.

HMRC: "It's just one small change."

This year alone, that's meant new digital record-keeping requirements, quarterly submissions replacing the old annual return, and fresh updates to how agents access accounts.
