Tax comes out of your salary every month, so it’s easy to think everything’s already covered. But that’s not always the case.

PAYE mainly deals with the tax on your salary.

If you also earn money from property, savings, investments or overseas income, you may have extra tax to pay or income that needs to be reported to HMRC.

If you sell shares, property or another asset for more than you paid for it, you may also have Capital Gains Tax to report and pay.

So even if your salary is fully taxed through PAYE, income coming from somewhere else may still need separate attention.

Save this for future reference.✅

Think Self Assessment is only for self-employed people? It isn’t. Here’s why.

You can be employed and taxed through PAYE every month and still need to file a tax return.

PAYE mainly deals with your employment income. It may not cover money coming from somewhere else. Let’s say you rent out a property, do some freelance work, receive investment income or make a taxable gain.

So the question isn’t simply whether you’re self-employed. It’s whether there is anything else in your tax position that needs reporting.

Not sure whether you need to file? Send me a message.

Got a bonus coming? The tax planning may need to happen before payday.

Before your next bonus is paid, understand whether pension contributions, Gift Aid, timing or your wider remuneration package could change the outcome.

Once your income starts approaching £100,000, an extra payment can affect more than the amount of tax taken from your payslip.

The options available will depend on your circumstances, but the important thing is having that conversation before the money is paid, not after.

Save this for later. 🤝

Own more than one property? This could be costing you.

As a portfolio grows, the setup that worked for the first property does not always make sense for the next one.

Your income may have changed. Your borrowing may look different. You might want to reinvest more of the rental profit, take more personally or start thinking about selling or passing the portfolio on.

That is why personal ownership versus company ownership is not simply a case of choosing whichever sounds more tax-efficient.

Tax, financing, legal implications and your longer-term plans all need to be looked at together.

Need to review your property setup? Let's talk!😊

A tax return can tell you what happened last year.

What it cannot tell you is: whether you could have made a better decision before the year ended.

Maybe there was still time to:
✨ review how you pay yourself
✨ make a pension contribution
✨ change the way something was structured
✨ plan ahead for a property purchase or sale
✨ prepare properly before selling your business

The key is timing. Once the decision is made, there may be less we can do.
Got a big decision ahead? Send me a message.😊

You might be borrowing money from your own company without realising it. ⚠️

If you run a limited company and regularly transfer money from the business account into your personal account, some of those payments may need to be recorded as a director’s loan.

There are a few common ways to take money from your limited company:

1. Salary through PAYE
2. Dividends from available profits
3. Repayment of business expenses or money the company already owes you

If the transfer does not fall into one of those, it may need to be recorded through your director’s loan account. Failing to record and deal with it properly can lead to tax consequences for both you and the company.

That is why it is worth keeping track of what you are taking from the company throughout the year, rather than waiting until the accounts are being prepared to work it all out.

Not sure whether those transfers count as a director’s loan? Send me a message.😊

Britain once created a tax that encouraged people to brick up their own windows. 🤯

Today, there are business owners redesigning their ambitions around the VAT threshold.

VAT can affect your prices, margins, customers and administration, so it should never be ignored.
But there is a difference between preparing for VAT and treating business growth like something to avoid.

The current VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover, and the test is not simply based on what you make during a calendar year.

Your business should not need to sit in the dark just to remain on one side of a number.

Is the VAT threshold helping you make better decisions, or quietly teaching your business to stay small?

A lot can change in a business in three years.

You might have changed your prices, grown your team, moved premises, added new services or completely changed where you want the business to go.

But when did you last look at the way the business is actually set up for tax?

It is easy to keep doing what worked at the beginning simply because nothing has forced you to change it yet. That does not always mean it is still the best fit.

If your business looks very different now from when you started, it might be time to give the tax side the same review. 📈

If your business has grown but the tax setup has stayed exactly the same, send me a message and let’s review it. 💬

I mean, loving what you do is chic.

But so is knowing whether the money coming into your business is actually turning into profit, having a plan for paying yourself and dealing with a financial problem before it becomes an expensive one.💅

I feel particularly passionate about having an accountant who asks what happens next, by the way.

Which one would you add?
