Research from the Yorkshire Building Society:

First Time Buyer (FTB) mortgage applications in Q2 of 2025 increased by 12.4% year on year, resulting in 131,682 applications across the market.

This is even beating the number of home mover applications at 112,100 – up 8% in Q2 2025 versus the same period in 2024.

Q1 2025 followed a similar trajectory with an increase in FTB applications – the highest year on year increase since 2022.

Even through the set back of the stamp duty tax changes in April this year, there is confidence in the market for FTBs with lower mortgage rates, growth in real earnings and some lenders relaxing affordability criteria.
