Last week was one of those pinch me moments , standing in front of an audience at the University of Exeter Employment Awards as my business Hamilton Pullen Financial Planning was sponsoring the Community Award . This was my fourth year but, this one felt different.
In my speech, I spoke about the South African philosophy of Ubuntu which ultimately means “I am because we are.”
It is the belief that our lives are shaped by the people around us, that kindness matters, and that none of us succeed alone.
It felt different not only because I prayed so hard I wouldn’t stutter as I tend to do when nervous and He listened.. not one bit of stuttering 👏But mainly due to me meeting the winner, Sara Abengro. Sara shared that my speech had resonated so much with her, because she too had moved to the UK from another country , Italy . And, she too understood what it feels like to build a new life, find your place, and create a sense of belonging.
All our journeys may begin in different places, many of our experiences are shared. We all need encouragement. We all need connection. We all need community.
Sara embodies everything this award stands for, and it was an honour to recognise her contributions.
Congratulations again to Sara and all the nominees who are making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Because in the end, success isn’t only measured by what we achieve. It’s measured by the impact we have on the people around us.
Ubuntu. I am because we are.
