🌱 Stronger Businesses. Stronger Communities.

One of the principles at the heart of B Corp is community.

It recognises that businesses do not operate in isolation. They are part of something much bigger.

At Griffin, supporting our local community has always been central to who we are.

We work with a wide range of owner-managed businesses, charities, schools, academies and organisations across the South West, helping them grow, thrive and create a positive impact of their own.

Our commitment extends far beyond the work we do for clients.

🀝 Managing Partner Misty Nickells is proud to serve on the Board of the Devon Chamber of Commerce, helping champion businesses across Exeter while contributing to the wider Devon business community.

πŸ’™ Partner Laura Waycott also gives her time as a Trustee of both InFocus Charity and The Exeter Dispensary, supporting organisations that make a meaningful difference across our region.

⚽ As a team, we're proud to support local fundraising initiatives too, including taking part in the RBC Brewin Dolphin Charity Football Tournament, helping raise money for local causes while enjoying a little healthy competition.

🌟 We're also proud Boost Your Business Network Partners, supporting a vibrant community of entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders by sharing knowledge, building relationships and encouraging collaboration across the South West.

Creating opportunities is equally important to us.

From apprenticeships and career development to supporting the next generation of accountants and advisers, we believe businesses have an important role to play in strengthening local economies and communities.

Wherever possible, we also choose to work with local suppliers and businesses, helping keep investment, expertise and opportunity within our region.

For us, community isn't simply where we work. It's something we're proud to invest in.

Because when communities thrive, businesses thrive too.

There's something special about spending the morning surrounded by people who genuinely want to see one another succeed.

On Tuesday morning, members of Team Griffin, Misty Nickells, Laura Waycott and Nick Grimes, had the pleasure of attending the latest event at the beautiful Froginwell Vineyard Event Venue Vineyard β˜€οΈ

As proud Boost Partners, it's always a privilege to be part of a community that brings together so many passionate business owners, entrepreneurs and leaders from across Devon.

A huge thank you to James Court for sharing such an honest and inspiring reflection on his journey from corporate life to building a brand, business and community. It was a powerful reminder that success is rarely a straight line, and that resilience, relationships and purpose often shape the greatest opportunities.

The atmosphere in the room was full of positivity, encouragement and genuine conversation, exactly what great business communities should be about.

Thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome. We look forward to seeing many familiar and new faces again soon.

πŸ‘‹ Griffin To Know You – Meet Connor Harris

At Griffin, we know great businesses are built by great people, which is why our Griffin To Know You series shines a spotlight on the individuals behind the firm.

This month, we're introducing Connor, who works across accounts, tax and audit, supporting a diverse portfolio of businesses, charities and academy schools.

Connor first joined Griffin as an apprentice and has grown tremendously throughout his career with the firm. Looking back, he laughs when he remembers how nervous he was answering the telephone! Today, building strong client relationships and supporting businesses with confidence is one of the parts of the role he enjoys most.

What keeps Connor motivated is the variety. From preparing accounts and providing tax support to carrying out audits on-site, every day brings the opportunity to learn something new and understand how different organisations operate behind the scenes.

He believes great teamwork comes from everyone working towards a shared goal while supporting one another along the way. It's one of the reasons he values Griffin's welcoming and collaborative culture so highly.

During busy periods, Connor stays focused by working towards milestones and deadlines, taking real satisfaction in seeing projects through to completion and helping clients succeed.

One piece of advice that has stayed with him throughout his career is the importance of developing "stickability" - keeping the end goal in sight, even when things become challenging.

Outside of work, football keeps him busy. Alongside playing for Exmouth Albion FC, Conor also supports the club behind the scenes with social media, finances, funding and administration. ⚽

Thank you, Connor, for everything you bring to Team GriffinπŸ‘

"Cashflow Is Key" - Profit is important - but cash is what keeps a business moving.

One of the most common challenges we see is,

β€œWe’re profitable on paper…..so why does cash still feel tight?”

Because profit and cash are not the same.

Cashflow pressure can come from,

πŸ“… Debtor delays (customers paying later than expected)
πŸ“¦ Supplier timings (paying out before goods/revenue convert)
πŸ’° Loan / HP repayments (cash leaving before income arrives)
πŸ‘₯ Staffing costs (including rising employment costs)
🏒 Fixed overheads (rent, rates, mortgages, utilities)
πŸ“ˆ Investment in growth (stock, equipment, recruitment)

To stay ahead, businesses benefit from understanding,

βœ” Forecast cashflow (predicting future cash position)
βœ” Margin performance (what profit you are making)
βœ” Breakeven point (sales needed to cover your costs)
βœ” Debt commitments (loans and finance obligations)
βœ” Scenario planning (how changing sales/costs impacts profit)

Using real-time management information helps businesses make informed decisions early - not after problems arise.

At Griffin, we take pride in helping our clients use financial insights to help shape the future, not just report from looking at the past.

πŸŽ‰ It's been another busy and rewarding week for Team Griffin!

Last night, we were delighted to sponsor the Devon Chamber of Commerce Chamber Summer Bash & Hidden Heroes Awards. It was a fantastic evening celebrating the incredible people, businesses and organisations that make Devon such a great place to live and work. Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners - and thank you to everyone who made it such a memorable event πŸ‘

πŸ’» Earlier in the week, our team joined Optimising IT | B Corpβ„’ IT for an insightful Lunch & Learn exploring Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365. From Outlook and Teams to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, it was a great opportunity to discover how AI can help us work smarter, save time and continue delivering the best possible service to our clients. A huge thank you to Ben Smith for for sharing your expertise.

πŸ‘£ We also brought the whole Griffin team together for one of our regular Town Hall meetings, where Martyn Kelland introduced the exciting WellWorX workplace wellbeing app. Alongside supporting wellbeing throughout the year, we've also kicked off our very own office challenge... a race around the world (in steps, of course! 🌍). A little friendly competition, plenty of teamwork and a lot of motivation!

Weeks like this remind us that great businesses don't just focus on numbers. They invest in their people, embrace learning, support their community and make time to celebrate together.

Here's to another great week with Team Griffin πŸš€

πŸ‰ What a day at Twickenham on Saturday!

As proud season ticket holders, we had the privilege of watching an incredible Premiership Final and what a game it was.

Whilst it may not have been the result we were hoping for, the passion, commitment and performance shown by Exeter Chiefs made us incredibly proud to be supporters of this fantastic club.

More than anything, the sense of community, togetherness and camaraderie amongst the Chiefs family was truly special to be part of.

Well done Exeter Chiefs - we'll be back next season, cheering you on every step of the way πŸ’ͺβš«οΈπŸŸ‘πŸ”΄

πŸŽ“ Supporting the leaders shaping the future of education.

This week, we were delighted to welcome school business leaders, finance professionals, trustees and academy sector colleagues to our Griffin Academy Seminar 2026.

As the education sector continues to evolve, strong financial leadership, effective governance, collaboration and long-term strategic planning have never been more important.

The seminar brought together a fantastic line-up of expert speakers, each sharing practical insight and real-world experience from across the academy sector:

🎀 Antony Power from PHP Law LLP explored Foundation Partnerships – A Practical Model for Collaboration, Inclusion and Sustainability.

🎀 Natasha Brown from The Harbour Schools Partnership shared her experience and insight on Merging Multi Academy Trusts.

🎀 Andrew Ward MRICS and Richard Jarman MRICS from Jarman Ward Limited delivered a valuable session on Understanding Your Estate.

🎀 Michael Jarrold from Griffin provided key Updates, Audit Findings and Income Diversification for the academy sector.

The morning generated excellent discussion around collaboration, governance, financial sustainability, estates, growth and the challenges and opportunities facing educational organisations today.

At Griffin, education is a sector we are proud to support. Through our specialist audit, accounting and advisory services, we work alongside academy trusts and educational organisations to help them navigate change, strengthen governance and plan confidently for the future.

A special thank you also to Paul Astridge and the team at ASTRIDGES CATERING LTD for providing the wonderful food and refreshments throughout the morning. Your hospitality helped create a fantastic atmosphere for learning, discussion and networking.

Finally, thank you to our speakers and everyone who attended and contributed to such an engaging, insightful and valuable event.

⚽ From the Office to the Pitch!

Last Wednesday evening, Team Griffin were delighted to take part in a fantastic 5-a-side charity football tournament organised by RBC Brewin Dolphin.

The event brought together local accountants, law firms and professional services businesses for an evening of friendly competition, networking and fundraising, all in support of two incredible local charities: Devon Air Ambulance and Exeter City Community Trust.

We were pleased to be part of Β£1,500 that was raised on the night, helping to support the vital work these fantastic organisations undertake.

As for Team Griffin...we're proud to say we battled our way through the competition and made it all the way to the final! ⚽πŸ₯ˆ

While we narrowly missed out on lifting the trophy, it was a fantastic evening, full of teamwork, great conversations and plenty of community spirit.

A huge thank you to Brewin Dolphin and Rhi Macaulay for organising such a brilliant event.

After all, the real winners were the charities and communities that will benefit from the funds raised.

On Tuesday Team Griffin attended Digital Devon, hosted by Devon Chamber of Commerce, and came away feeling positively challenged, refreshed and inspired!πŸ’‘

One of the key themes throughout the day was that AI should be seen as a partner - helping businesses work more efficiently, create capacity and support better outcomes, whilst still retaining the human expertise, judgement and relationships that matter most.

The keynote speakers and panel discussions provided practical insights into how businesses can embrace technology, adapt to change and continue evolving rather than standing still.

It was also great to catch up with so many familiar faces from across the local business community, including teams from Chalk & Ward, Cosmic UK, Fresh Air Studios, Optimising IT | B Corpβ„’& One Voice Media

A special mention too to Gemma Boss and Helen Wylde-Archibald, who were featured on BBC Spotlight covering the event! 🎬 It was fantastic to see both the event and the important conversation around AI and business innovation receiving wider recognition.

We're looking forward to exploring some of the ideas shared and turning inspiration into action!
