👋 GRIFFIN TO KNOW YOU...Meet Harvey Field!

It's time for another Griffin To Know You, where we introduce the people behind Griffin Chartered Accountants! 💙

This time we're getting to know Harvey, one of our Audit & Accounts Seniors, whose role has developed considerably since he first started out in accountancy.

From building his confidence with clients to taking on more complex work and now supporting newer members of the team, Harvey has certainly come a long way!

💬 What has made the biggest difference to your confidence?

"Definitely getting out and meeting clients, attending audits and speaking directly with people. My communication skills have developed so much and that's made a huge difference to my confidence."

🔍 What do you enjoy most about your work?

"External audits! I enjoy the logic behind them and understanding how different businesses operate. There's always a reason behind what we do and I really enjoy getting into the detail."

🤝 What's important when building great client relationships?

"Listening and understanding things from the client's perspective. Every business is different, so it's important to build trust and not take a one-size-fits-all approach."

🌱 And what do you enjoy about helping newer colleagues?

"That moment when something clicks for someone you've been helping! There's a real sense of satisfaction in seeing people develop and achieving things together as a team."

⚽ Away from the office?

- Harvey plays football for Bideford, is a big Tottenham Hotspur fan and has recently taken up golf! ⛳
- His ideal Devon weekend? A trip to the beach, particularly Bantham or somewhere in the South Hams. 🏖️
- And...if Harvey takes control of the office party playlist, expect a mix of Oasis, Britpop and country music! 🎶

It's great to see Harvey continuing to develop, taking on new responsibilities and sharing his knowledge with others across the team.

🌱 What does an apprenticeship really look like once you are well into the journey?

For Amber, Imogen and Christian, it means combining professional study with meaningful client work, growing responsibility and the confidence to take greater ownership...

🏫 Amber has been involved in academy audits, developed her client communication and become more confident making decisions. Being recognised as Employee of the Month was a particularly proud moment in her journey.

📞 Imogen has grown in confidence when communicating professionally with clients, especially over the telephone. She has always felt able to ask questions and is continuing to build her knowledge, with a particular interest in taxation for the future.

🤝 Christian has valued the hands-on nature of the role and the trust he has been given to take responsibility for his own work. He also highlighted how colleagues always make time to help - many having completed apprenticeships themselves and understanding the challenges involved.

✨ Their experiences are different, but the common themes are clear: real responsibility, constructive support and continuous development.

💼 For our clients, that matters. Investing in people helps Griffin build a knowledgeable, confident and committed team that understands the importance of communication, good judgement and high-quality work.

Taking time to celebrate the wins together🥂

Last week the Griffin team headed to Samuel Jones on Exeter Quay for a lovely evening together.

The occasion was Jared becoming a fully qualified Chartered Accountant - a fantastic achievement and definitely one worth celebrating! 👏

For us, though, evenings like this are also about taking time to come together as a team.

We’re incredibly proud of the people and culture we have at Griffin. Supporting each other, recognising achievements and enjoying the moments that matter along the way are all an important part of that.

Because when someone in the team succeeds, it’s lovely to be able to celebrate it together.

Good food, great company and a very well-deserved celebration. 💙

A thought-provoking morning at Exeter City Conversations yesterday! 💭

Misty Gill and Laura Waycott had a brilliant morning at Exeter Chamber latest City Conversations event, hearing from a great mix of speakers on some of the opportunities enges facing our city, businesses and communities.

⭐ Helen Wylde-Archibald shared an update on the Chamber’s work supporting businesses and building resilience through challenging economic times.

⭐ Bindu Arjoon, Chief Executive of Exeter City Council, gave an insightful update on Local Government Reorganisation and the priorities for Exeter moving forward.

⭐ Danny harris from Exeter City Community Trust shared more about the fantastic work taking place across our communities and the exciting plans for the King George V playing fields.

A particular takeaway for us came from Henry Sanford of AB Brand & Marketing, who challenged everyone to think about the environmental impact of marketing - including some surprising insights into the resources behind the content we consume and create every day 🌱

As a recently certified B Corp, that really resonated with us. Sustainability isn’t only about the obvious things - it’s about continuing to question the impact of the everyday decisions we make across all areas of the business, including how we market and communicate💡

Plenty to think about and take back to the Griffin team....

As we focus on our amazing Griffin apprentices, we couldn’t be prouder of Jared Mills, who joined us as an apprentice six years ago and is now a Chartered Accountant. 🎓👏

University wasn’t the route Jared wanted to take. An apprenticeship gave him a credible alternative - the opportunity to earn while learning, gain professional qualifications and build real-world experience from the very beginning.

Fast forward six years and he now manages his own client portfolio and is beginning to guide and support others coming through behind him.

“I know I have grown as a person and now as a leader. It has changed my life.”

For us, that’s what investing in apprenticeships is all about - developing talented people for the long term, building the skills and experience our clients rely on and creating a pathway for those who don’t see university as the right option for them.

Recruit. Learn. Develop. Progress. Lead. Mentor. Repeat. 🔄

Most of us can probably think of someone who believed in us, backed us or gave us an opportunity at an important point in our career.

We want to be that for others.

Jared’s advice to those following behind him is simple:

“Believe in yourself, back yourself and keep putting in the work.”

Perhaps his reflection on the last six years says it best:

“My apprenticeship gave me confidence, a meaningful career and a sense of purpose. I feel like I have found my why.”

We would like to give a big shout-out and "thank you" to Porsche Centre Exeter for a great day of hospitality at the lovely Bovey Castle yesterday ☀️

Our managing partner, Misty Nickells, was treated to a test drive in the fantastic new Porsche Electric Cayenne...amongst a range of other activities, including a display of the majestic birds of prey, archery, target shooting (who knew Misty was such a good shot🎯) all topped off with a delicious barbecue 🙌

A huge thank you to the team and Clare Maher for your kind invitation and for James Court from James Court - Founder - Boost Your Business Network for being our guest - it was great to meet so many lovely people for networking in such a picturesque setting!
