Still one of the biggest misconceptions that I get asked about quite a lot.

‘If I give money away, someone gets taxed on it.’

In reality, most people can gift money freely without immediate tax consequences. Yes, Inheritance Tax can come into play for larger estates and certain gifts… but for most families, helping children, grandchildren or loved ones is far simpler than people think.

So don’t wait forever to help the people you care about.

One of the hardest parts of being an IFA is when a client passes away. Sadly, I’ve already lost three clients this year — a reminder that life can be far too short.

At that point, my focus shifts entirely to the family — helping ensure everything is in place and guiding them through what can feel overwhelming at an already difficult time. When financial matters are organised properly, it removes a significant burden and allows families to focus on what truly matters.

It’s why planning ahead is so important. Wills, Powers of Attorney, and clear succession planning aren’t just formalities — they’re there to protect you and your loved ones when it matters most.

Sometimes starting this discussion can be the hardest part but knowing the answers to some difficult questions can feel very reassuring.

The Value of True Independence 🤓👔

For me, being a fully independent financial adviser has never been the product of chance— it’s a personal commitment. Independence gives me the peace of mind that when I sit down with a client, I know the solutions I recommend are based solely on what is right for them.

I’m not tied to a single provider, or pressured by targets that steer advice in one direction. Instead, I have the freedom — and the responsibility — to search the whole of the market. That means if the very best solution for my client exists, I will find it.If it doesn’t yet exist, I’ll know I’ve tested every option available.

True financial advice is about trust, transparency, and objectivity. Clients deserve to feel confident that their future is being shaped by recommendations driven by their needs.

It’s what allows me to say, with certainty, that every piece of advice I provide is focused on one outcome: the best possible solution for the individual in front of me.

From London to the Isle of Bute, it’s always a pleasure travelling to see my clients. I often hear people say face-to-face contact is becoming a thing of the past—but I believe it’s still essential to building strong, lasting relationships.
