💙 FREEAGENT ROADSHOW 💙

This morning we had great time at the Making Tax Digital (MTD) special Partners Roadshow run by the cloud software Freeagent 🪽

It took place at the stunning Harbour Hotel in Southampton, with the beautiful views over the turquoise sea and the weather certainly surprised us ☀️ ⛴️

💼 Can You Claim Entertainment Expenses? (UK Tax Guide)

Short answer: Usually… no. ❌
But there are a few important exceptions 👇

🍽️ Client Entertainment
Taking clients out for meals, drinks, or events?
➡️ Not allowable for Corporation Tax
➡️ You still need to record it properly

🎉 Staff Entertainment
Good news! This can be allowable ✅
✔️ Staff parties (e.g. Christmas party, annual summer bbq)
✔️ Annual events up to £150 per person (limit not an allowance)
✔️ Must be open to all employees

☕ Everyday Staff Costs
Small perks like team lunches or coffee?
➡️ Often allowable if they’re for staff welfare

🚨 Watch Out
• Mixing staff + clients? The client portion is disallowed
• Doesn’t matter if it brings in business—HMRC still says no

💡 Top Tip:
Always keep receipts and clearly separate staff vs client costs

🎁 Trivial Benefits – A Simple Tax-Free Perk 🎁

Did you know UK company directors and employees can receive small benefits tax-free under HMRC’s Trivial Benefits rules?

To qualify, the benefit must:
✔️ Cost £50 or less (including VAT)
✔️ Not be cash or a cash voucher
✔️ Not be a reward for work or performance

🎁 Common occasions this can be used for:
• Birthdays
• Christmas or seasonal gifts
• Work anniversaries
• Small thank-you gestures
• Staff morale treats

👔 Directors of close companies can receive up to £300 per tax year in trivial benefits.

When the rules are met, there’s no Income Tax, National Insurance, or P11D reporting.

Yesterday’s women-only networking session was extra special as we spent the afternoon pottery painting, sharing stories, laughter, and inspiration🪻

📢 Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – Coming April 2026

From April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will become mandatory for many self-employed individuals and landlords.

If your annual gross income from self-employment and/or property is over £50,000, you’ll need to:

✔️ Keep digital records
✔️ Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
✔️ File a final end-of-year declaration

MTD is part of the government’s wider digital tax transformation led by HM Revenue & Customs to make the tax system more efficient and accurate.

If you think this may apply to you, now is the time to prepare. Moving to compatible software early can make the transition smooth and stress-free.

🥞 Happy Pancake Day! 🥞

We’ve been a little quiet on here recently – it’s been a busy season for us (turns out tax returns don’t file themselves 😉).

But we couldn’t let Pancake Day pass without flipping back into your feed!

Shrove Tuesday was traditionally the last chance to use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk and sugar before the start of Lent – a bit of forward planning we can definitely appreciate.

Fun fact: The famous pancake race in Olney dates back to 1445, when a woman reportedly ran to church still holding her frying pan! Talk about racing to meet a deadline… ⏱️
