Women own more wealth than at any time in history. Money is being earned, created through entrepreneurship, and inherited by women through wealth transfer at a rapidly growing rate.

But for many women there are still significant barriers to growing their wealth and gaining financial security. This is because they must navigate a financial and economic system designed predominantly by men, which often doesn’t reflect their lives.

However, a quiet revolution is happening. With women holding more wealth in their own right, they are beginning to demand a different approach from financial services providers – and from financial advice. While the pace of change is likely to be slow, a shift is on the horizon.

A Will is a legal document that sets out how your estate should be distributed after your death.

Without a valid Will, intestacy rules apply. That means the law decides who receives what.

A Will can also appoint guardians for children and name executors to manage the estate.

It’s not about the size of your estate.

It’s about clarity.

Keeping a Will up to date is important, particularly after major life events such as marriage, divorce or the birth of children.

Legal advice should be sought where appropriate.

What happens when AI gets a body?

Unitree Robotics, a Chinese maker of humanoid robots, staged a successful listing in Shanghai last week, with its share price rising 460% on its first day of trading. The company recently unveiled “Superman”, able to jump two metres and run at over twelve metres per second. While profitable, traditional metrics reveal Unitree to be highly valued, trading on a historic price-earnings ratio of 900x and a price-to-sales ratio of 147x. Despite this, the company’s $50 billion-plus value reflects high expectations as investor attention in AI widens beyond software-based large language models (LLMs), semiconductors and cloud storage to physical applications. Does your business rely on the talent or expertise of a key individual? If so, how would it fare if they were no longer able to work?

Small to medium businesses in the UK are notoriously underinsured, leaving them exposed to serious risks. For many, the loss of a key person may result in a major risk. However, putting protection in place to cover this risk can help shield your business from financial vulnerability in the event that one of your key people falls seriously ill or dies.

What happens when one of the world’s most valuable companies isn’t allowed into the S&P 500?

SpaceX has become one of the largest companies on the planet. Yet despite its size, it currently doesn’t qualify for inclusion in the US’s flagship stock market index, the S&P 500. Why?

All stock market indices have eligibility criteria which companies must meet in order to be listed on them. These include the size and value of a business (the market cap of a company), as well as having a minimum number of their shares available to be traded publicly.

With a market value just under $2 trillion, SpaceX is one of the 10 most valuable businesses globally. However, only around 7.5% of its shares are publicly trading, and the company is yet to achieve profitability, so SpaceX does not meet the eligibility criteria for some stock indices.

Yet in many ways SpaceX is no ordinary company. Its scale, profile and the level of investor interest surrounding its listing make it difficult for index providers to ignore. This has created an awkward dilemma for stock index providers. Should they stick rigidly to their rules, or change them to reflect the reality of today’s market?

If SpaceX entered the S&P 500 at roughly a 4% weighting, funds tracking the index could be forced to buy billions of dollars’ worth of SpaceX shares almost overnight. That buying pressure could push the share price higher still.

Tax relief refers to the reduction of tax payable on certain contributions, most commonly pensions.

Under current UK legislation, pension contributions typically receive tax relief at your marginal rate. In simple terms, part of what would have been paid in income tax is redirected into your pension.

The level of relief depends on your individual tax position.

There are annual allowances and lifetime limits that apply, and tax rules can change.

Tax relief does not remove investment risk. Pension funds are usually invested and can rise and fall in value.

You may receive back less than originally invested.

Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change in future.

With the support of 90% of Labour MPs (349 in total), Andy Burnham has replaced Sir Keir Starmer as the UK’s prime minister for the remainder of this parliament, ending in August 2029 (at the latest). While pledging to do things differently, there are many challenges ahead. We take a closer look at some of the domestic issues the new prime minister may consider priorities.

AI earnings help fuel record S&P 500

The S&P 500 reached a record high this week buoyed by low US producer and consumer inflation readings in July indicating inflationary pressures are being contained. A stream of strong AI earnings releases reinforced bullish sentiment.

Although markets are indicating a near 70% chance that the US central bank will keep interest rates at their current level next month, SJP’s Chief Economist Hetal Mehta notes the recent inflation breakdown shows “quite a big jump in the price of computers and other AI-related equipment. This AI buildout isn’t necessarily all positive for the economy.” A further cloud was that US retail sales data for July was weaker than expected but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq still managed to end the week in positive territory on receding rate hike expectations.

For many people in their 30s and early 40s, life can feel like a constant balancing act – managing a mortgage, building a career, raising a family and trying to keep up with day to day costs.

With so much focus on the here and now, thinking about long-term protection can easily fall down the priority list. This could leave many financially exposed to unexpected events.

Millennials, those aged around 30 to 45, are at a defining and often stressful stage of life.

Andy Burnham’s first week as the new UK prime minister saw a raft of announcements. These included exempting those whose only income is the state pension from income tax, cutting VAT on energy bills and a £2 cap on bus fares. There was also news of a reduction in business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues.

The Treasury has said that anyone whose sole income is the basic or new state pension will not have to pay income tax. Due to the freeze on the personal allowance (which has stood at £12,570 since 2021), many pensioners had been expected to be pulled into the tax net for the first time as state pension payments rose.
