We thought long and hard about how an accountancy firm could possibly post about National Biscuit Day… 🤔🍪
Then it came to us.
The Great Jaffa Cake VAT Debate.
For years, HMRC and the courts battled over one very important question:
👉 Is a Jaffa Cake a cake… or a biscuit?
Why does it matter? Because in the UK, cakes are zero-rated for VAT, while chocolate-covered biscuits are standard-rated. Naturally, this became a serious legal matter….. 🕵️♀️
McVitie’s famously argued that Jaffa Cakes are cakes because:
✔️ They go hard when stale (biscuits go soft)
✔️ They’re made like cakes
✔️ People eat them as cakes
And in 1991, the tribunal agreed. A victorious day for cake-kind everywhere. 🎉
2026 brings us this plot twist 🤯 …
Happy National Biscuit Day from your favourite VAT enthusiasts!
