For many people, tonight will be about enjoying the football. However, major tournaments can also bring a constant stream of betting adverts, app notifications, promotions and in-play markets.

The Scottish Gambling Education Hub warns that betting on live sport, including football, can allow people to place quick, repetitive bets and may present a higher risk of gambling harm.¹

New official figures published this week show that, during the previous four weeks:

🎯 10.3% of adults in Scotland had taken part in betting.

📱 9.5% had bet on sports or racing online or through an app.

The same survey suggests that around 1 in 20 Scottish adults who had gambled during the previous year had used savings or borrowed money because of their gambling at least occasionally.²

🛍️ Buy Now, Pay Later is changing today.

From today, many Buy Now, Pay Later agreements come under FCA regulation for the first time, giving customers stronger protections when using BNPL.

The changes include:

👉 More affordability checks before you can use Buy Now, Pay Later.

👉 Clearer upfront information about how much you will pay, when payments are due and what could happen if you miss one.

👉 More help from lenders if you begin struggling with repayments.

👉 The right to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service if something goes wrong.

BNPL can be a useful way to spread the cost of a purchase, particularly when it is interest-free. However, it is still a form of borrowing, and several smaller agreements can be harder to track than one larger balance.

Money Wellness says one in four people seeking its help now has at least one BNPL debt, up from 15% in 2023. The average number of BNPL accounts held has doubled from 1.4 to 2.8, even though the average amount owed has fallen from £636 to £251.²

We have seen a similar upward trend. In our latest customer survey, 14% said BNPL was one of the debts they were most worried about, up from 12% the previous year. This remained well below credit cards at 76% and personal loans at 59%, but it shows that BNPL is becoming a more noticeable part of household debt.¹

The new rules are designed to make BNPL safer, clearer and easier to manage. It will be interesting to see whether stronger checks and clearer information help prevent multiple repayments from becoming unaffordable.
