It’s surprisingly easy to leave a pension behind when you change jobs — and simply assume it will look after itself.

But an old pension could have:

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) also reported in 2026 that some legacy pension products may provide poorer value because of older product design and complex charging structures.

And in an FCA/DWP/TPR illustration, a £10,000 pension growing in a poor-performing scheme could reach around £10,400 over five years, compared with £15,100 in a high-performing one. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝟒𝟔% 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

That doesn't mean every old pension is bad — far from it. But it does mean your pensions are worth reviewing. Because the pension you forgot about today could be funding your lifestyle tomorrow.

During a recent client meeting, we discovered that the client had been a 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫-𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, paying into a pension throughout that time — but had never completed a Self Assessment.
