“Can’t I just transfer my pension to my kids to avoid inheritance tax?”

It’s a question we hear a lot — but unfortunately, it’s not as simple as handing over your pension while you’re still alive.

Most pensions are designed to provide retirement income for you, so there are strict rules around access and withdrawals. Taking large sums out just to gift them away can trigger income tax, affect your retirement plans, and in some cases even create additional tax complications.

The good news? Pensions can still be one of the most inheritance tax-efficient assets available.

Depending on your circumstances, options such as:
✔ Keeping pensions outside of your estate
✔ Using beneficiary nominations correctly
✔ Gifting from surplus income
✔ Trust planning
✔ Making use of annual gifting allowances

…can all help families pass on wealth more efficiently.

Good estate planning isn’t about finding loopholes — it’s about putting the right structure in place early, whether that's spending more, gifting away or protecting the liability.

A conversation today could make a huge difference for the next generation tomorrow.

Many UK adults are understandably worried about serious illness, yet a large proportion still don’t have financial protection in place if the worst were to happen.

Recent research from Vitality highlights the gap between concern and cover:

- 61% of people worry about a cancer diagnosis
- 53% are concerned about having a stroke
- 52% fear a heart attack

Despite this, only around 1 in 10 (11%) say they actually hold a policy that would provide financial support if diagnosed with one of these conditions.

Even among those who do have cover, understanding isn’t always clear. Around 42% of policyholders aren’t sure whether their plan would end or continue after making a successful claim.

This is where a protection adviser really adds value.

Protection isn’t just about taking out a policy — it’s about making sure you have the right cover, that it actually pays out when needed, and that you understand exactly how it works. An adviser can cut through the jargon, compare options, and tailor protection around your real-life risks and financial responsibilities.

At Scottish Pension Advice, our qualified financial advisers help clients make sense of protection alongside their wider financial planning, so they’re not left guessing when it matters most.

⚖️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐩: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫

New insights highlight a growing concern in retirement planning – women are still, on average, retiring with significantly less pension savings than men.

This isn’t about choices made today alone – it’s the result of lifelong factors such as career breaks, part-time work, lower average earnings, and time spent caring for family. Over time, these differences can have a major impact on retirement income.

📉 The result? Many women face a much smaller pension pot when they reach retirement age, meaning their money needs to stretch further and last longer.

At 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞, we believe everyone deserves clarity and confidence about their future – regardless of income history or career path.

💡 Whether you’re planning ahead, catching up, or just want to understand where you stand, small steps today can make a big difference tomorrow.

Despite all the talk of a widening wealth gap, there are signs that private pension savings are improving — with more people building up retirement pots than in the past.

It’s a reminder that while gaps still exist, progress is happening — and small, consistent steps really do add up over time.

If you’re paying into a pension, you’re already moving in the right direction 👍

Younger adults are not as badly off compared to older generations as feared because their private pension wealth has been under-estimated, a new report shows.

1. 💸 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨
The most obvious one: unclaimed pensions mean individuals are literally leaving their own retirement savings behind.

Across the UK, billions of pounds sit untouched simply because people don’t know the pensions exist.

2. 🧾 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
If you don’t know how much you’ve actually saved, you can’t accurately plan your retirement income.

This can lead to under-saving, unnecessary stress, or delaying retirement.

3. 🔍 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞
Companies merge, rebrand, or close.

People move house and forget to update pension providers.

The longer a pension is forgotten, the harder it becomes to trace.

4. 🛡️ 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞
Some older pension schemes have high fees or poor investment performance.

If you forget about a pension, you’re not monitoring it — meaning you might be losing money without realising.

5. 🧠 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫
When pensions aren’t documented, families may struggle to locate them if the pension holder becomes ill or passes away.

This can lead to delays, missed benefits, or assets never being claimed.

If you think you might have a lost or forgotten pension, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Help is available and it’s easier to get started than you might think.

An annuity is a financial product that converts some or all of your pension pot into a 𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 — a setup that can provide peace of mind when you’re planning for retirement. Unlike drawdown, annuities offer certainty of income regardless of market ups and downs, which some savers find reassuring as they approach later life.
