🚨 BREAKING NEWS FROM ASKABAQUS HQ 🚨

Stewie, our Senior Office Dog, is 14 today! 🎉🐶

After another productive year of sleeping during office hours, demanding regular attention and strategically positioning himself between Tom and the kettle, Stewie has once again exceeded expectations.

Management has therefore approved a generous birthday bonus in the form of a steak this evening. 🥩

Applications to join Stewie’s department remain closed, mainly because Stewie refuses to share the steak.

Happy birthday to our oldest, wisest and most horizontal colleague! 🐾

⚠️ Have you registered for Making Tax Digital?

HMRC has confirmed that from September it will begin signing up taxpayers who were required to join MTD in April but have not yet done so.

This is an important warning for anyone who has delayed registration or is unsure whether they are affected.

A client asked Tom a brilliant question in a meeting recently: “If you were in my position, what would you have done differently?”

It caught him off guard - in a good way. He stopped, thought about it properly, and gave them the recommendations he’d make if it were his own business.

It’s a great question, and probably one more business owners should ask their accountant. Not just: “What happened?” or “What do I owe?”But: “What would you do next?”

💙🚗 A fantastic day at the Classic Car Show! 🚗💙

AskAbaqus was proud to support the annual Classic Car Show at Highnam Court, Gloucester, in aid of the wonderful Pied Piper Trust.

Our very own Sarah volunteered at the event and had an amazing time soaking up the atmosphere. From stunning classic cars to a wide range of activities for all ages, it truly was a brilliant day out for the whole community.

Even better, the event raised a fantastic £60,000 for the Pied Piper Trust an incredible achievement that will make a real difference to sick and disabled children in the region.

A huge well done to everyone involved in organising, volunteering, and attending 👏

We’re delighted to have been part of such a special day!

We’re finding that quite a few tax returns we’re working on at the moment are coming out with lower tax liabilities than last year. That can mean the second payment on account due by 31 July 2026 is either reduced or sometimes not needed at all.

So if you think your income was lower this year, or your tax position has changed, it may be well worth getting your return done early rather than waiting until January.

It could save you from paying more than you need to now and waiting for it to sort itself out later.

Happy Global Running Day! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ Today is the annual celebration of running, held on the first Wednesday of June — and this year it falls on Wednesday 3 June 2026.

So, in honour of the occasion, here’s your regularly scheduled reminder that Tom is a runner (in case he hasn’t mentioned it recently) and has completed 3 marathons.

And while Sarah isn’t a runner at present, she has form too - having completed the Cheltenham Half Marathon a few years back.

With both of our directors having some miles in the legs, maybe determination, endurance and pacing are just part of the AskAbaqus leadership style.

🌡️ Heatwave perk idea: buying the team ice-creams 🍦
A small gesture for morale… but what about the tax? 👇

✅ Usually tax-free for employees (Trivial Benefits)
If the ice-cream costs £50 or less per employee, isn’t cash, isn’t a reward for performance, and isn’t in their contract, it can be a trivial benefit - meaning no tax, no NIC, and nothing to report.

👀 Director watch-out (close companies) Directors of close companies have a £300 per tax year cap on trivial benefits.

🏢 Corporation Tax: generally allowable Staff treats are usually an allowable business cost, as long as they’re genuinely for employees (and not really customer entertaining in disguise).

🧾 VAT (if you’re VAT-registered) Staff-only treats are often fine for VAT recovery. If clients/guests attend, you may need to split the cost and only reclaim the staff portion. Directors-only “treats” can be trickier.

🧠 Admin tip: Keep the receipt + a quick note (“staff ice-creams – heatwave morale/welfare”).

🚗 Business mileage update (UK)

The approved work mileage rate for people using their own car for business travel is set to increase by 10p - from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles - and it’s backdated to April 2026 (start of the 2026/27 tax year).

What this means:
✅ If you drive as part of your job (e.g., visiting clients or moving between sites), your employer can reimburse you up to 55p/mile without tax or NI.
✅ If your employer pays less, you can claim tax relief on the difference.

Example:
If you’re paid 30p/mile, the shortfall is 25p/mile - and you can claim tax relief on that amount.

Tip: This is for business journeys, not normal commuting - keep a simple mileage log (date, start/end, purpose, miles). There are apps available to track this.
