So another school holiday is done! Another 4 weeks until the next one...

The school holidays do feel relentless at times. Just as I feel like I’ve found a rhythm of parenting & business - you know the weeks where work flows, the kids routines are routining, and I have half a chance of finishing a hot cup of tea - another school holiday appears on the horizon. And I have this mantra on repeat: just keep juggling!

This is one of the reasons I run my own business though: to have flexibility and enjoy family time. It’s also why so many of my clients are mums - because they know I get it. If a call needs to be moved because there’s a school assembly or they’re a bit slower at replying at times I totally understand and my approach is always family first.

At the beginning of this year I set myself a goal to take the summer off. And to be honest right now I’m not sure if it’s going to happen but I’m still hopeful.

We’ve got a 2 week holiday booked so that’s time I definitely won’t be logging on - the laptop will be staying firmly at home (my husband will be checking 😆).
And I’m working on other plans to bring some work forward so I can take more time off.

It’s going to mean a busy June & July but hopefully a relaxed & family-focussed August

It’s a cliche to say I know, but being a mum and running a business is definitely a juggle! It has taught me a lot about myself and how to organise my time. I’ll be sharing some more soon about how I organise my days and keep my focus, but I’d love to know from you how the Easter holidays went? Did you survive the juggle? And any tips to help me take the summer off! ❤️

Last month I took myself off for a week for our annual “Business Besties Retreat”. This time we went to Woburn Forest Center Parcs it worked perfectly!

We had time to relax, pop for a swim or a walk in nature and restaurants just there for when we wanted to go out to eat. Of course, we had to go and try even one!

The focus for the week was to work ON our businesses. There was no set agenda but it was time to each focus on what our own business needed and have the opportunity to chat it through, sharing tips & ideas and support.
The main thing I worked on was MTD - trying to fully get to grip on everything it entails and how it will impact my clients. I worked on my processes, packages & pricing and also developed my own knowledge & skills.

The biggest benefit for me from the whole week was taking the space and time to have some reflection and thinking time. It helped me reprioritise and take a step back from the busyness of everyday working mum life.

I also made sure not to just focus on work whilst I was there! I found time to go to the spa for some “me time” plus having fun on the rapids & meals out with my friends.
It was a great mix of work and wellness with some of the best people by my side.

I’m looking forward to doing it again next year, but it’s also reminded me of the importance of taking regular time to work ON my business. How often do you take time to work ON your business? And how do you fit this in - small regular chunks or one big week?

This is something I hear quite a lot from sole traders... they don’t want the extra expense of using a system like Xero.

I get it, none of us want to feel like we’re wasting money or spending unnecessarily. But here’s the thing - paying £7 or £16 a month could be saving you a LOT of time. And we all know time = money.

I know - because my clients are proof - that using Xero saves you time each month. This time can then be spent doing other things in your business, and quite likely charged to a client, so making you money.

Spending on subscriptions like this, and outsourcing any work, is a bit of a mindset shift, and it’s a really important one to take if you want to grow your business.

If you need help managing your business finances, and using Xero, then I’d love to help you. As well as offering “done for you” services I also offer monthly support & mentoring packages especially for sole traders and those just starting out. Pop me a message to find out more.

As we approach the beginning of the new Financial Year here are some key changes to be aware of that will affect your payroll and tax from April:
💸 National Minimum Wage increases to £12.71 (for over 21’s)
🤒 Changes to SSP eligibility and family leave

💸 Dividend tax rates increase by 2%
💸 VAT relief for business donations on goods to charities
👷 Construction industry scheme rules tightened

📊 MTD comes in for self assessment (see my previous posts for more details)
💸 Corporation tax late filing penalties increase

Don’t let these changes catch you off guard! Ignorance is not a defence when it comes to HMRC compliance.

Make sure you understand what is changing from 6th April 2026 and how it affects you & your business. Consult your accountant or bookkeeper if you’re not sure. If you need help then pop me a message.

MTD starts on 6th April 2026 and the first Quarterly Submission must be filed by 7th August 2026.

If you’re not ready for what this means for you then you are running out of time.

Take a look through this post for a timeline of key actions you need to be taking.

There’s lots you can be doing NOW to prepare for MTD. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Get everything prepared so you’re confident that you’re ready to comply.

⚠️ You need to sign up for MTD; HMRC will not automatically opt you in so if you know you’re eligible (or not sure) then get signed up now.

There’s lots of help and guidance available on the HMRC webpages and if you’re already using a cloud based accounting software they should also have help and guidance available.

If you need more support (or want someone to manage it for you) then do get in touch and we can chat!

The final step to a tax return without the stress is to get professional support.

Quite often overwhelm can come from a lack of understanding and therefore confusion. Finding people to support your business with a practical and personalised approach can make all the difference.

When you’re looking for a bookkeeper or accountant, make sure you find someone who:
😃 you feel comfortable talking to
😃 will tailor their services to the size and need of your business
😃 will explain things in simple language, and not baffle you with jargon!

You may not need someone to manage your books every month, but having someone available to answer questions and provide guidance is invaluable. If you need support then do get in touch as I offer a range of services from quarterly mentoring check ins to a full bookkeeping service.

Step 3 to Tax Returns Without the Stress is all about finding the right tech 🧑‍💻

Setting up the right tools that work for you & your business can eliminate a lot of admin time and relieve the mental load.

📝 Tech should make your life easier, and relieve stress. If you’re currently using tech that is adding time and complication then it may not be right for you (or it’s not set up right for your business).

I recommend all businesses use an accounting software platform; this also means that your MTD ready. I recommend Xero as it has flexible plans and features to suit all shapes & sizes of business.

In addition using a document management tool, like Hubdoc or Dext, helps keep track of all our receipts and makes transaction reconciliation quick and easy.

There’s lots of other tools out there that could help your business but this depends on what you do and how you work. If you’re finding things taking a long time then it’s worth investigating if there’s a tool that could help.

Save this post and keep following for step 4 for a stress free tax return.

Accountability removes procrastination!

Something I’ve realised in the 10+ years of running my own business is having a small business buddy is essential. Something me and my business besties do is hold each other to account. There’s no big stick or telling off, just a gentle message to check in on progress and give a nudge when we need it.
This is particularly effective when it comes to the tasks you often avoid.

So my second step for a stress free tax return is to find yourself an accountability buddy 🤝

Someone to check in each week and make sure you’re doing your finance hour. Even better if you find someone to block out the same hour each week and you can jump on a call and both do your finance hour at the same time!

If you don’t have a small business buddy who can do this then speak to your accountant or bookkeeper, they’ll probably be happy to send you a little nudge.

Send this post to your small business friends to start getting accountability.
