What does your business need to earn to give you the life you want?

You probably know your turnover. You might have a sales target too. But how did you arrive at it?

Was it based on what you actually need, or just a bit more than last year?

Your Magic Number starts with you: what you want to take home, the lifestyle you’re working towards and what the business needs to deliver to make that possible.

From there, we work backwards, taking account of business costs and margins to understand what you need to bring in.

That gives you something useful to plan around. How many jobs or clients does it mean? Does your pricing stack up? Is the target realistic with the time and team you’ve got?

Because “get busier” isn’t much of a plan.

- What’s working, and what’s frustrating you. Are you getting answers when you need them? Do you hear from your accountant throughout the year?

- How clear you feel about your numbers. Do you know what to set aside for tax, how your cash flow looks and whether the business is making the profit you expected?

- What support would help. Whether that’s taking admin off your hands or having someone to talk to before a big decision.

You’ll leave with a clearer idea of any gaps and some practical next steps. If the support you have is doing the job, we’ll tell you that too.

You’ve bought the software. So why are you still doing all the admin?

Sometimes the next step is using what you’re already paying for better. That’s one of the conversations Alan’s opening up in this week’s Three Things Thursday.

1. Software everywhere. Still buried in admin. Have your processes actually changed, or have you just added another subscription?

What does better accounting support actually look like?

You’re busy, the diary’s full and money’s coming in. But you’re still not sure what you can take out, what you owe in tax or whether the business can afford another member of staff.

Better support means:

- Knowing what to put aside for tax before the bill arrives.
- Understanding what’s left after the costs of doing the work.

Materials and labour are only part of the cost. What about travel, quoting, supervision, waste disposal and going back to fix things?
