From 1 July 2026, vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes used on international hire and reward work must have a second generation smart tachograph fitted, and their drivers come under full EU drivers' hours rules. In practice that means limits like a maximum of nine hours driving a day, with a 45 minute break after four and a half hours at the wheel.

If your vans only ever operate within the UK, you can breathe easy. Nothing changes, and you carry on under GB domestic rules. But the moment a van crosses into the EU for hire and reward, this applies.
