"Do I need a tachograph in my van now?"
Short answer: probably not. Slightly longer answer: it depends, and the internet has been unhelpfully dramatic about it.
Since 1 July 2026, vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes need a Smart Tachograph 2 if they're doing international hire or reward work. That's the actual rule.
What that means in practice:
Van stays in the UK and never crosses a border? No tachograph needed. UK domestic drivers' hours rules apply as before.
Under 2.5 tonnes? Not affected, wherever you drive.
Crossing into Europe for hire or reward in a 2.5 to 3.5 tonne van? That's the one to look at.
There are a few specialist exemptions too, so if you're not sure which side of the line you sit on, it's worth checking properly rather than guessing.
